Mike Thompson:
Republicans made it clear from the start that they had no intention of playing nice with President Barack Obama. They opposed anything and everything he proposed simply because it was connected to him. They prevented him from passing his agenda, then told Americans to elect them so they could reverse all the damage caused by the Obama agenda that they ensured was never passed.
Yet there was President Obama the morning after the election at a press conference singing, "come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and love one another right now." How many times must Obama get metaphorically hit over the head before he realizes Republicans are being true to word when the announce again and again that they have no intention of playing nice? Even if that means killing legislation that would benefit Americans?
Yes, it would be great if things were different, and yes it was noble and appropriate for Obama to reach his hand across the aisle initially. But how many times does the president have to get his hand slapped away before he realizes it’s time to take off the gloves?
