Sick F**k's Rule Our Discourse

by Steven D

One more day, one more damning, murderous racist blast from Glen Beck "fantasizing" about the death of people not like him. In this case, President Obama:

God forbid anything bad happen to the people I so love to hate.

That was the theme of Glenn Beck's Thursday radio broadcast, in which he spun a series of myths about the president's ongoing trip across Asia into a violent fantasy about Obama getting his head cut off by radical Muslims angry that he'd supposedly forsaken Islam. <...>

In Beck's Thursday afternoon radio spiel, the often dramatic and conspiratorial right-wing radio host suggested that because Obama had supposedly forsaken Islam, he's placing himself at risk of being killed by radical extremists in India, who would just as soon "behead" him.

"God help us all," he said. "Why is the president putting himself in danger? Why is anyone allowing him to put himself in danger, and if it’s not a danger, why do we have 34 warships? <...> I don’t care if you spend $10 billion to protect the President. Nothing can happen to the president, period. I don’t like the man. He’s the President of the United States nothing can happen to him, so I don’t care how much money you spend, but why is he going there? Why are we spending $2 billion to put him there?”

The remark about 34 warships, and the claim of expenditures topping $2 billion for the president's trip, is without merit according to the White House.

People call Fox News and its "hosts" "Radio Rwanda" for a reason. In most of the country talk radio has no progressive voices to counter the hate and bigotry and eliminationist speech of right wing talk radio. All you hear are variations on a theme, and that theme is hate thy neighbor and pray for his or her death. That is especially true if your neighbor is one of the following: Democrat, liberal, progressive, homosexual, transgender, African American, Muslim, Hispanic, Scientist, atheists, ad nauseam.

Expect this kind of hateful, demonizing, "someone ought to take out these godless heathens trying to destroy America" rhetoric to ratchet up even more over the next two years.

As Sarah Palin would say: You Betcha!

expending more effort at ratcheting down the hate, minimizing the tea party, etc. It will be interesting to see what happens.

3. What gets me even more than the hate speech are the lies. Why are the allowed to lie?
And what's even more disgusting are the little sheeple that believe every word Beck & Limbo and their ilk say.

6. "hate speech" is protected by the 1st amendment. We, not the government,
need to do something about it such as more speech countering it, boycotting sponsors, protests, etc.

8. I see your point

but IMO this goes far beyond it, when a "supposed" "news" anchor, goes on TV in front of who knows how many viewers and talks about the President getting his head chopped off, whether it be here or in another country. He is promoting hate with others, and literally talking about someone killing Obama. He shouldn't even be on the "news" after that. That is over the top hateful dangerous rhetoric, that can encourage one to take action.

4. I spent some time in forums with RepubBaggers this last election cycle, almost without
fail, they insult people they don't know and make more or less direct references to violence and often, also, sex.

And they're enthusiastically rude at their doors and on the phone.

5. This is some serious shit
Right now, as I type this, there are seriously deranged individuals who are sucking in all this bullshit.

And their warped ideas are being reinforced by this "liberal conspiracy" fantasy that Beck keeps POUNDING into their heads.

If enough of these people EVER find common cause and decide to create chaos and bloodshed, it will be worse than JFK.

Honestly, no act of RW political violence is EVER going to surprise me after this. Shock me, yes. But surprise me... no.

9. K and R.
I've said many times that racists in America can experience social mobility and fame in the media despite the fact they capitalize on the filth they spew. It's the reason why Pat Buchanan, Trent Lott, Bob Barr and many others can say what they want without suffering any consequences. A person from a disenfranchised group is dehumanized publicly without retraction simply because "political correctness" is seen as a bad thing in this country.

The most angering thing about this phenomenon is that without fail there are persons who deny what the racist in question said. The defenders of the bigot claim the purported subject matter isn't derogatory in nature. Because the person in denial negates an experience of racism, they are in essence protecting the racist and giving such negative ideas legitimacy. In short, people who speak up about how a public figure expresses racism gets shouted down and silenced because the act if utter denial is given credence in the world of privilege.

There are wonderful and good people out there who actually "get it" and recognize these instances of wrongdoing. However, the majority of folks from the dominant culture participate in the denial and silence because it puts one's privilege on the line. Furthermore, no one wants to give up the privileges
that elevate them over "the other".

The lack of anyone taking action to stop the daily public dissemination of racist thought almost ensures that the bigots in question will still have a voice. Therefore, the person of color continues to be nullified in the eyes of society.
