I'm NOT tired of defending him

I've got his back.

I'm going to do my best to shout down his attackers... whether they be on the right or the left... every single time they attack.

Call me whatever fucking name you want to call me.

and he's using a technique called triangulation that's not helping the working environment at all. In fact, it's making it harder. It's alright to have his back but you might also want to consider educating him in how to be a better employee.

8. A good employer knows the value of a great employee.
They will let that person expand on current plans, allow them to try new ways and to see them to the finish.

A poor employer will try to manipulate a great employee into being one of the herd. They're easier to control that way.

33. "Many ways to look at this, aren't there?" Agreed. For starters, you have the wrong paradigm...
An elected official is not the same as an "employee" to us, no matter how many times this meme gets repeated at DU, and no matter how satisfyingly powerful it makes the one who repeats it feel.

We didn't hire him, we elected him for a term of office. Barring assassination or an impeachable offense, he will serve a minimum of 4 years. That's what we elected (not hired) him for. Electing someone else is not the same as firing him -- it is electing someone else.

Sending more right wingers to Congress is not the same as writing a performance evaluation for an employee -- we don't have a parliamentary system where voters can vote "no confidence" and all that happens with more Repubs in Congress is that they swear to gum up the works some more.

27. There's zero evidence to indicate that we would have ended up
with better legislation coming out of the Senate, if only the president would have been more aggressive. We got a LOT done, considering something like 90 bills were squashed in the Senate, and they won't even staff up the agencies with needed appointments.

Had the president set an even more aggressive agenda, there's no rationale for thinking those more aggressive bills would have passed, when we had to fight for the steps we did make.

You want to be disappointed or mad, be mad at the obstructionists in the GOP. Obama "getting tough" wouldn't have made a bit of difference IMO, except to give the other side more ammo (he's not acting very presidential, he doesn't have the 'steadiness' that the job requires, etc).

69. Evidence: LBJ
He didn't get the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act by sitting uninvolved in the White House. He went to the Capitol, demanded votes, and got them.

But be satisfied with a multi-billion dollar handout to the insurance industry. None of us can talk you out of it if you are.

Be satisfied with a President who lets Rahm Emanuel make calls on his behalf and doesn't demand anything out of his party-mates.

What is good enough for you is not good enough for others of us and we'll simply never agree.

That should be a fuckin' bumper sticker, that should be.

Hehe... I'll make one for my car at least... the honesty mobile I'll have to start calling it... hell, I'll make a sticker for all 5 sides... presuming that no one underneath will be able to help but see one of the other 5 sides at some point...

"Democrats: never pressing for leftist policy ever again! Vote {insert 3rd party} instead, unless you make $80K+"

Now that's a bumper sticker... I'm on it...

some criticism goes way too far.

He is a Democrat, he may not be exactly the type of Democrat you perceive him to be.
It would be one thing if you said "He's not the Liberal he never claimed to be, either."
"He's not the Progressive he never claimed to be, either."
"He's not the Moderate"
You get the idea, but to say "He's not the Democrat he never claimed to be, either" is OTT criticism.

It was JOBS and ECONOMY on peoples minds. Yes the MSM played a huge roll in it, but Obama did little to stop them.

Getting rid of Howard Dean, Not listening to Paul Krugman, and doing everything Goldman Sachs told him to do played a huge roll in this.

When Bush was in office he had his people on every show imaginable pushing his message. Obama's afraid of "Over exposure" so he
doesn't try to get his message out much at all.

speculating in the negative each and everyday about
anything and everything.

Look, I like Howard Dean as much as the next person,
but he was not the reason that Democrats won in 2006 and 2008
by his lonesome in any way.....It was WAR and THE ECONOMY then as well....
considering he got his ass kicked by the media in 2004, it wasn't about Dr. Dean
and what he miraculously did.

As for Paul Krugman, he wanted the banks to be nationalized.
He wanted the first Black President to kill capitalism.
That would have worked out great! NOT!

Bush was a mindless ruthless asshole. But then, you knew that.

If folks could have become reasonable and had admitted that they really understood how
legislation happened (but of course they had to pretend not to have a fucking clue)
and had started defending Barack Obama, perhaps his fucking message would have
gotten out......but noooooo, Folks just had to just sit there and side with the fucked up media....
and in a long run help the Republicans! They thank all of you for your service. They need you
there doing it some more....cause it ain't over. Far as they are concerned, they are just
getting started, and therefore, you still have your use.

FrenchieCat, I watched various polls in N. ATL (advance voting and on election day) in 2008 and for the 2010 midterms.

In 2008 for advance and Tuesday voting the lines were long, crowded and incredibly diverse. There were many younger voters, black, white and latino. This year the crowds were lighter. There were far fewer young voters, far fewer young and latino voters. They stayed home, apparently and the stats bore that out. The majority of voters were in their 40s, mainly in their 50s, with plenty over age 60.

But we can want somebody who will fight for what is right. There is honor and progress in fighting, even if/when you lose. You never know how far you can get unless you try. Or you can whine about how we don't have the votes instead of trying to get them, like LBJ did.

Edited on Mon Nov-08-10 05:30 AM by BzaDem
And Obama knows he doesn't. Rather than fight for what was not possible and not get anything, he figured out what he could get and got it. Actually, that was just like LBJ did. LBJ figured out what he could get and got it.

The only difference is that what LBJ could get after fighting was actually quite different than Obama could get after fighting. LBJ had 66-68 Democratic Senate seats. And on the civil rights bill, he had 20+ Republicans supporting civil rights in addition to the Democrats that did.

101. not at all.
I guess it is easy to say it looks that way from a rear view mirror, but at the time, the passage of the civil rights act and the voting rights act were not probable, much less inevitable. There were "whites only" and "colored only" restrooms, drinking fountains, swimming pools, railroad cars, schools, and more in a good portion of the country. Legally sanctioned segregation such as we cannot dream from the safety and security of 2010. And a good portion of the Dem majority you so smugly write-off was from the South. All those votes LBJ got were hard won with cajoling, persuasion, threats, and promises. Good old fashioned horse trading, log rolling, moral suasion, and probably some blackmail to boot.

Obama did none of that. None. He had Rahm make a few calls and the rest was up to Nancy. He didn't want a fight and he didn't fight one. I'm so sick and tired of the old "the votes weren't there" line. It's so complacent. You don't take the votes that are there. You MAKE the votes, That is the only way anything ever happens in this country, from Title IX, to the Brady bill, to Social Security, to the National Labor Relations Act.

20. LOL! Where you been?

Our Past, Future, & Vision for America

.....

Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. Let's set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed. Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability. Let's make college more affordable, and let's invest in scientific research, and let's lay down broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across America.

And as our economy changes, let's be the generation that ensures our nation's workers are sharing in our prosperity. Let's protect the hard-earned benefits their companies have promised. Let's make it possible for hardworking Americans to save for retirement. And let's allow our unions and their organizers to lift up this country's middle-class again.

Let's be the generation that ends poverty in America. Every single person willing to work should be able to get job training that leads to a job, and earn a living wage that can pay the bills, and afford child care so their kids have a safe place to go when they work. Let's do this.

Let's be the generation that finally tackles our health care crisis. We can control costs by focusing on prevention, by providing better treatment to the chronically ill, and using technology to cut the bureaucracy. Let's be the generation that says right here, right now, that we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president's first term.

Let's be the generation that finally frees America from the tyranny of oil. We can harness homegrown, alternative fuels like ethanol and spur the production of more fuel-efficient cars. We can set up a system for capping greenhouse gases. We can turn this crisis of global warming into a moment of opportunity for innovation, and job creation, and an incentive for businesses that will serve as a model for the world. Let's be the generation that makes future generations proud of what we did here.

Most of all, let's be the generation that never forgets what happened on that September day and confront the terrorists with everything we've got. … We can work together to track terrorists down with a stronger military, we can tighten the net around their finances, and we can improve our intelligence capabilities. But let us also understand that ultimate victory against our enemies will come only by rebuilding our alliances and exporting those ideals that bring hope and opportunity to millions around the globe.

But all of this cannot come to pass until we bring an end to this war in Iraq. Most of you know I opposed this war from the start. I thought it was a tragic mistake. Today we grieve for the families who have lost loved ones, the hearts that have been broken, and the young lives that could have been. America, it's time to start bringing our troops home…Letting the Iraqis know that we will not be there forever is our last, best hope to pressure the Sunni and Shia to come to the table and find peace.

Finally, there is one other thing that is not too late to get right about this war - and that is the homecoming of the men and women - our veterans - who have sacrificed the most. Let us honor their valor by providing the care they need and rebuilding the military they love. Let us be the generation that begins this work.

…That is why this campaign can't only be about me. It must be about us - it must be about what we can do together. This campaign must be the occasion, the vehicle, of your hopes, and your dreams. It will take your time, your energy, and your advice - to push us forward when we're doing right, and to let us know when we're not. This campaign has to be about reclaiming the meaning of citizenship, restoring our sense of common purpose, and realizing that few obstacles can withstand the power of millions of voices calling for change.

By ourselves, this change will not happen. Divided, we are bound to fail.

http://www.america.gov/st/usg-english/2009/January/20090114121011jmnamdeirf0.7378046.html

My Vision for America -

I'll be the president who ends the tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas and start putting them in the pockets of working Americans who deserve it. And struggling homeowners. And seniors who should retire with dignity and respect.

I'll be the president who finally brings Democrats and Republicans together to make health care affordable and available for every single American. We will put a college education within reach of anyone who wants to go, and instead of just talking about how great our teachers are, we will reward them for their greatness, with more pay and better support. And we will harnesses the ingenuity of farmers and scientists and entrepreneurs to free this nation from the tyranny of oil once and for all.

And when I am president, we will put an end to a politics that uses 9/11 as a way to scare up votes, and start seeing it as a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear weapons; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease.

We can do this. It will not be easy. It will require struggle and sacrifice. There will setbacks and we will make mistakes. And that is why we need all the help we can get.

61. FAIL 18, PASS 3, IMHO.

FAIL (This means outsource jobs that can be done overseas)- Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age.

FAIL (he simply wants to privatize schools) - Let's set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed.

FAIL (This means break up the teachers unions) - Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability.

PASS A (he made student loans much more affordable, but really college should be freely available to all) - Let's make college more affordable,

??? and let's invest in scientific research,

FAIL (Comcast is my only option) - and let's lay down broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across America.

BIG FAIL (rich are richer, poor poorer, he has helped the ultra rich game the system further) - And as our economy changes, let's be the generation that ensures our nation's workers are sharing in our prosperity. Let's protect the hard-earned benefits their companies have promised. Let's make it possible for hardworking Americans to save for retirement.

LOL FAIL (EFCA a non-starter) - And let's allow our unions and their organizers to lift up this country's middle-class again.

FAIL (not happening) - Let's be the generation that ends poverty in America. Every single person willing to work should be able to get job training that leads to a job, and earn a living wage that can pay the bills, and afford child care so their kids have a safe place to go when they work. Let's do this.

FAIL (mandating purchase of crappy insurance from rip-off companies is not HCR) - Let's be the generation that finally tackles our health care crisis. We can control costs by focusing on prevention, by providing better treatment to the chronically ill, and using technology to cut the bureaucracy. Let's be the generation that says right here, right now, that

BIG FAIL (screw him for caving in to big pharma so we can not purchase drugs in bulk, no public option, no single payer, no medicare expansion - just a gift to big insurance.)- we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president's first term.

FAIL (he could have crushed BP and broken them up, instead our gulf is a disaster. Our wind turbines come from China) - Let's be the generation that finally frees America from the tyranny of oil.

FAIL (I have not forgotten that we have never investigated what really happened on 9-11) Most of all, let's be the generation that never forgets what happened on that September day and confront the terrorists with everything we've got.

FAIL (we still have 50,000 troops there, we will be there forever) But all of this cannot come to pass until we bring an end to this war in Iraq.

FAIL - Finally, there is one other thing that is not too late to get right about this war - and that is the homecoming of the men and women - our veterans - who have sacrificed the most. Let us honor their valor by providing the care they need and rebuilding the military they love. Let us be the generation that begins this work.

FAIL (he has failed to listen to progressives and others who got him in the WH, he stands directly opposed to our policy positions) That is why this campaign can't only be about me.

A FOR EFFORT! (BUT HE KEEPS PUSHING OTHER FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS THAT OFFSHORE JOBS)- I'll be the president who ends the tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas and start putting them in the pockets of working Americans who deserve it.

FAIL (should have bailed out the homeowners, not the banksters) -And struggling homeowners.

FAIL (cat-food commision, work till your 70) And seniors who should retire with dignity and respect.

ROFL FAIL (mandatory crapsurance is not HCR) - I'll be the president who finally brings Democrats and Republicans together to make health care affordable and available for every single American.

PASS - We will put a college education within reach of anyone who wants to go,

FAIL (this is code for bust up the teachers union) - and instead of just talking about how great our teachers are, we will reward them for their greatness, with more pay and better support.

FAIL - And we will harnesses the ingenuity of farmers and scientists and entrepreneurs to free this nation from the tyranny of oil once and for all.

I have nothing against President Obama personally. But as President he has not implemented the policies he indicated he promised when he was candidate Obama.

Let me see anybody defend these major 'FAILS':

21. My President, Right or Wrong?
Should you be shouting down "attackers" if their criticism is spot-on, or their perspective is valuable? Those who "attack" from the Left are just like the "attackers" from the Right? Keith Olbermann is just like Fox News?

Hey, I like the guy as much as the next person and am glad he is President as opposed to a lot of other people who could be in the office and it is critical to counter and be proactive against lies and anti-Obama propaganda and mythology - I do my best at it - but absolutism has a tendency to be detrimental to critical-thinking processes.

is increasing the wage limit.
And if that's the case,
(since you ain't doing nothing but speculating)
then what will you be criticizing him about next?
Not that I doubt you will come up with something....

See, I'm thinking that writing LTTEs, letters to the White House,
the Commission and elected critters with your message, either through
an organized bunch of folks who feel the same way, or as a lone citizen,
is a constructive way to make your views known. \

I'm just thinking that throwing rocks from a forum at the President,
might be kind of a weak way to an activist passionate about an issue.

It is important for us to voice criticisms before policies are enacted. Sitting back and thinking the best-case scenario will happen is foolish. The best case never happens. Our elected reps and the people on the commission are not 100% trustworthy, no one is. It is up to us to push for what we believe is right and against what we think is wrong or dangerous.

Ideologically, there is probably very little difference between you, I and the poster you are replying to. But functionally, there are those of us that accept the reality that a very small portion of this country identifies as being liberal vs those that identify as being conservative. We want liberal government but we also understand why we have to sneak it in through the back door a little at a time.

90. Not one policy defines you as liberal and when it comes to elections, how people identify themselves
...seems to take precedence over specific policies. Take for instance Ted Strickland losing to Kasich here in Ohio. Strickland is not some far left liberal and he even had the endorsement of the NRA as the pro-gun rights candidate. Typically rural Ohio is big on that. Yet Kasich won rural areas in Ohio but larger margins.

The tea baggers railed against bailouts, but they then support the candidates that most favor the banks.
