It is time for SNOPES to go Mass Media with a TV Presence.
It has come to a place, we no longer trust the news or mass media because of implied, perceived or actual political bias.

Fox outlets took a story.. from one newspaper in India, unvetted, and went ballistic with it.. repeating it over and over..

The President would be spending 200 million dollars a day and would have 1/10 of the US navy with them..34 ships.

If you take a deep breath.. the whole is so ludicrous, you cannot believe they would even put that up..

But they did.. and each news source picked up the one before without looking or asking and used the previous news source as its source.

We need a SNOPES show once a week, once a day.. 1/2 hour that will tackle these up and coming urban legends and just debunk them.

I know you would think that was the job of the new shows in the first place. But this is a brave new world where everyone is a lobbyist for a point of view.

1. One of the network morning shows gives them a segment .......
every once in a while. I forget which one, but I think it's the Today show.

6. I wonder.. it would not be opinion based..just fact based.. I think various media
outlets would have to agree to support it.. like CSPAN..

7. Very good idea! Perhaps it could be added
to Rachel, Ed, or Larry, Tweety (or Keith when he comes back) as a 5 minute spot on their shows, just highlighting the latest debunked crap that the FoxGOP is spewing.

That could be a launching pad for a future show.

We need a liberal billionaire to buy a cable station :). If Faux can do it so can we. How fun would it be to have a station that tells the truth, unvarnished, and for that extra drama that viewers need, just show the lies. Lord knows they are right out there with it - there is video, audio, written commentary - they don't even try to hide their agenda anymore, why won't someone expose it!!

8. On the positive side - the President and his sixteen wives, forty nine children,
Three thousand closest friends have left our country for their new Promised Land of India, supposedly for the Kenyan Birth Certificate burning party. They took 14,919 naval air craft carriers with them, 1,700 Black Helicopters, ten blank checks, and four of Hollywood's most notable catering staffs.

And while they were gone, early Saturday Morning, the East Coast was supposed to be obliterated. (And/or Chicago.)

But as far as I know, the East Coast is still there, unless what I am seeing is merely a clever hologram of that end of the nation, put up there on the Weather Channel in a most reassuring way.

(Who knew that the Weather Channel would be in on such a plot!)

10. Can the truth in advertising law be expanded?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 04:59 PM by OneGrassRoot
After all, we are paying to watch TV these days -- even if it's via the Internet, we are paying -- or someone is paying (library systems) -- to see "news" shows, read transcripts, etc.

At the very least Fox needs to remove the word "news" from its network since they do nothing but make shit up.

Check this out: There is no such law preventing candidates from lying to voters, however.

http://www.factcheck.org/2004/413-891806/false-ads-there-oughta-be-a-law-or-maybe-not/

Edit to add that I challenged Facebook contacts to take the top three news stories of the day across MSM and investigate the truth -- or lack thereof -- and provide detailed information as to the truthiness of it all. I attached the FactCheck.org piece regarding Obama's Indian trip.

No takers, needless to say. :eyes:

24. "Reality has a well-known liberal bias." -- Stephen Colbert to Bush
at the 2006 Correspondents' Dinner.

My favorite line was:

So, the White House has personnel changes. And then you (the press) write, "Oh, they're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." First of all, that is a terrible metaphor. This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring! If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!

Has that idiot Bachman retracted what she said about it? Probably not...their watchers love "ludicrous".

15. Media Matters is very good at this sort of thing.
They've already built a rep - they deconstruct and call out right-wing propaganda every day.

What Media Matters needs is a kick up to the next level in the media - they've already got cred in the MSM, typically on MSNBC, on Olbermann and Maddow, for example, but we need to build on that.

It's not just political urban legends that people need to be made aware of. I can't believe some of the hoaxes that are still spread all over the net.

23. Love what you said but I disagree that we need a show...we need to spread the word ourselves
on every Craigslist rant and raves in every purple and red state, till the curtain is pulled back on the bullsh*t and the wingers are finally shamed, as they should have been so long ago.

It's up to all of us. No wingers are going to read us to learn the truth, they will read us to fight us better. It's human nature, unfortunately.

We need the real news media to debunk to actually do their job and check the damn facts in their stories before they broadcast them.

spun to reinforce their distorted view of the world.
