CT Governor--Foley (R) finally concedes to Malloy
Edited on Mon Nov-08-10 03:16 PM by WI_DEM
Another pick-up for the Dems.

contested race finally comes to an end.

After Tom Foley's camp went through voting numbers in the heated governor's race in Connecticut, Foley has concede the race to Democrat Dan Malloy.

Foley said he plans to call Malloy this afternoon and congratulate him.

Foley said that, despite some problems, his team found no credicble evidence of fradulent voting amd he believes a recount would not change the outcome of the race....

Problems arose in Bridgeport, where several poll locations ran out of ballots on Tuesday and some people voted on photocopied ballots. Foley, the Republican candidate, has questioned the results.

The difficulties in Bridgeport also created some confusion in the CT-04 race, with the AP calling it for Dem Jim Himes while showing him running behind his challenger, on the basis of high turnout in Bridgeport

1. I'm trying to find out why Foley had to call a presser to do this.
My guess is that he's tired of the game and wants the Repub. Party off his back, so he can go back to his yacht and Greenwich Country Club. I am glad he stressed that his findings led him to believe there was no voter fraud in the Bridgeport voting hassle, just ineptness, which I agree with. But I am sure some nasty pukes want Foley to mix it up more...which would make Foley look like not only a sore loser but also a racist.

I think Foley's timing on this presser was unfortunate. It came only an hour after Dr. Pettit and his family gave some heart wrenching thoughts outside the courthouse after the death sentence was handed down to his family's killer. That poor man...I cannot imagine what it must be like to live in his skin...

3. I can confirm on the nasty pukes...
I have a friend (don't ask, long story) who field organizes for a local RNC satellite office. Her directions are, last we spoke a few days ago (she's stopped speaking to me.), to not recognize any subsequent Foley concession and agitate until they can get it into the courts.

If I had to go by the comments on her Facebook...I think that's still where she and they are at.

In today's NYT Malloy was quoted as saying Foley was "gracious." I think Foley just has no stomach for a big court fight which, as I said, will only make him look bad among the more genteel CT republicans...

5. Bad luck on the timing
Foley and his campaign had already committed to making a statement to the press before the jury had returned a verdict.

As for the need for a press conference, you can't do anything of significance as a politician of either party without the media insisting on a press conference so they can ask a bunch of stupid questions.

6. Foley can go live on his yacht and stay out of CT politics forever. And I grew up down the street

from where the Petit murders happened. It broke my heart and a lot of people in Cheshire too. I don't live there anymore. I moved away at 24 about ten years ago to Terryville but my parents still live down the street in the same house. Foley should have put off the press conference or done it earlier.

As an aside on the Petit murder trial, I normally am not a pro-death penalty person. I really only approve of it in incredible circumstances but as I told my Mom this morning, we know these guys are guilty. And they tortured a teenager and her little sister and their mother. And poor Mr. Petit. I used to go to this neighborhood as a teen as I had a lot of friends that lived off Sorghum Mill Road. These guys scoped the family out at the Stop and Shop that I have been too so many times. It is beyond creepy. I can't for some reason, go to that store anymore. When I drop by my parents house on occasion and need to pick up something on the way home I just cannot do it there. I can't imagine what the Petit family has gone through.
