Barack Obama joined Muslim prayers at school, teacher says-Newscorp Attack

AS a schoolboy in Jakarta, Barack Obama attended Muslim prayer sessions with his classmates against the wishes of his mother.

The US President's former grade three teacher said that Mr Obama - who was known as "Barry" when he attended the Menteng One school in Jakarta - studied the Koran and went to classes on Islam, despite the objections of Ann Dunham, a Catholic.

The teacher's recollections will add to speculation about Mr Obama's links to Islam during his much-anticipated visit to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, as part of his ten-day tour of Asia.

Mr Obama attended classes on Islam while the Christians attended classes on Christianity, said Effendi. Barry, he said, was alone among the pupils in that he insisted on attending both.

"His mother did not like him learning Islam, although his father was a Muslim. Sometimes she came to the school; she was angry with the religious teacher and said 'Why did you teach him the Koran?'" said Effendi.

2. When I was about 13, I used to raise my hand during "devotions" at a local Baptist church ...

to indicate that I has accepted Jesus as my personal savior.

On Friday nights, the local Baptist church would open its gym, and you could play teen basketball there. After a while, they'd stop the games and hold devotions. Near the end of devotions, they'd have a prayer, and then while everyone's head was bowed, ask everyone who had "accepted Jesus as their personal savior" to raise your hand.

What I learned is that if you didn't raise your hand, they noted it, and after devotions, some one would corner you and pressure you. Tell you you were going to go to hell, so on. They'd make you wait to play in the next set of games, as they grilled you.

The alternative was to raise your hand like most others did. This was risky too. They almost always called on one of the "hand raisers" and asked them to describe the moment of acceptance. And over time, they figured out who was pretending, so they would call on you, again, a form of pressure.

At one point, my friends and I decided to LEAVE the church before devotions, and then come back after. The Baptist church folks figured this out, and started to lock the exit doors. When my father learned this, he came the next week and explained that if they locked me or any other kid in there, he'd call the cops and press charges for kidnapping.

At that point (I was not very welcome), but they couldn't keep me out either. So they changed the rules, no one was allowed in AFTER devotions. So if you left before devotions, you could not come back.

SO I guess, you could claim that I am a born again Baptist. On many occasions, I bowed my head in prayer, and even raised my hand to indicate that I was born again.
