The only time abortion is mentioned is when it is politically expedient for them to do so. It's a rally point, nothing else. If the day ever came when Roe v Wade was overturned, they would lose fully 1/4-1/3 of their politically active core. The reality of the situation is that a lot of people are single issue voters, which helps to explain why they consistently vote against their own self/societal interests. I know of several people that have openly told me they would vote D, but "D" equates to choice support and they cannot bring themselves to vote anything but R because "R" equates to anti-choice.

I can't count the # of discussions, some bordering on the violent I've had about this situation w/people; it's a mindset.

This is a wedge issue they use. They could not care less about abortion. They know that it upsets the people who are against that and use that to get them to vote otherwise against their interests.

9. I've actually tracked the cycles...

turns out, about 6 months before an election the anti-choice forces in the R's build up, reaching a peak about a week before an election. By that time, the single issue voters are all hyped up and vote their candidate. Immediately following the election virtually all discussion of abortion ceases.

Once, when I brought up the myth of "partial birth abortion", I thought I was going to be stoned to death outside City Hall...:D People could not realize that once the actual birth began, unless under the most incredible situations involving the imminent death of the mother, no one would ever terminate a birth in progress. One person actually told me they had "knowledge" of "abortionists", (it's never Dr's), actually chopping off the heads of babies as they came through the birth canal! I called "bullshit, that would be absolute murder, no one has ever done that", and was shouted down by some of the most incredibly ignorant people I've ever known.

Most people don't even realize that there were no laws against abortion until the early part of the 2oth Century. This nation, (and every other nation), has a long history of abortion tolerance, it was just a lot quieter, and a lot more dangerous, before Roe v Wade.

10. Funny you mention the chopping head thing as I had a person in my home city

say the exact thing, never mind said person never personally knew or had a family member who had an abortion, he knew it to be true because it was on the 700 club. Never mind the same person was scared during the Gulf war that Saddam was going to send a scud missile to his house, something else he heard on the 700 club that was later debunked as stupid beyond belief.

The good thing was he never voted because it was a waste of his time because D's always steal elections, something else he learned from the 700 club. He also refuses to use computers because he thinks that a computer will be the next anti christ, special ed drop out at his best. No learning disability, his parents just told him education was evil and he was to ignore everything teachers told him, so he just sat in class doing nothing until he was old enough to quit school.
