I had high hopes at the beginning of this Obama presidency, but I just wrote my last letter to the White House this morning. I put out my flag in rememberance for my father and uncle who were WWII vets, and my oldest uncle who fought in WWI. I honor their service, because they were honorable men. I am a lifelong Democrat, but I'm not sure what Democrat means anymore. I'm sure my ideology doesn't fit well with my party anymore, my husband calls me a revolutionary.....so be it. I'm sharing this letter with DU in hopes that others will write to the White House. Maybe someone will listen.
Dear President Obama:
I don't know why I am writing this letter, I don't think that anyone reads my opinions or cares about the opinions of many others that write, but the news this morning that you are considering capitulating, giving in, appeasing again to extend the Bush era tax cuts to the wealthiest people is probably my last straw of hope for your presidency. I had hoped for another FDR or a Harry Truman who was not afraid to do what was needed to help this country, but we have elected a Neville Chamberlain who will do anything to get along with people who have said no, no, no, no, no to every initiative you have offered and you have said ok, well whatever you want Republicans. You have called me names, you have told me to stop whining, but Mr. President, I have supported Democrats all my life and you have now made me question that loyalty. Where is your loyalty to those who helped elect you on the promise of hope and change and courage? I don't care if you answer my letter, you never have before (only to ask for money) it will be my last. But, if you and the Budget Commission propose cutting my 93 year old mother's Social Security, I will not stand by quietly. And you wonder why the Democrats lost this last election. We just had a Supreme Court Judge Mr. Alito attending a Republican fund raising event and under most ethical codes of conduct this would be grounds for and investigation and possible impeachment. But, again, it's just an example of how broken this government is and how regular people like me find that the rules only apply to us and not to them. Apathy, anger, frustration....common folk lose their jobs every day for infractions of company policy and yet a Supreme Court judge has impunity because he knows no one will take action. Do you even understand how this feels or looks to those of us in the real world? I have lost respect for my government. I live in a state, Texas, that is thinking of abandoning Medicaid for 3.6 million people in this state 70% of which are children. This is a Republican State Mr. President, and I'm ashamed and sickened that this will happen under your watch. Now we can abandon children and perhaps many will die from lack of health care, and the Republican's will shout it from the rooftops how they saved the taxpayers of Texas from the evil Health Care Reform. You lost control of the message, you lost control of the dialogue. People respect, RESPECT fighters, appeasers lose every time. The Republicans are going to take this country down, all we can do is stand and watch.
