Thank you to all the Veterans of DU..
This is my my fourth Veterans Day without my Dad.. a veteran of WW2 who went in on Omaha Beach.

Veterans Day was always a special day in our family. It is just not the same with Dad gone.

When Dad died, (He was also Shriner).. his Lodge did a special service for him at the wake. One of the other elderly members of the Shrine and Masons.. came up to my Mom and told us something we never knew.

At lodge meetings he and my Dad would sit and have coffee and converse in French. I did not even know my Dad could speak French. They had both been in the European Theater and stationed in France for a period of time. It just made me realize how each of us is so much deeper in our experience than what most ever realize, Even family members.

I miss my Dad, he was a great patriot and lovely man. So to all the DU vets.. I am sending a salute..

4. My grandfather was a navigator for a supply plane in the South Pacific
Edited on Thu Nov-11-10 02:54 PM by dave29
his favorite story was about running out of bullets and throwing his gun at Japanese soldiers as they attempted to take off from a very small Island after dropping off supplies. Their plane was being swarmed, but they got out of there OK. He lived to be 77, but I surely miss his great smile.

Here's to all our vets :)

10. I had 4 uncles in the fight. One
was stationed in England and got the gear ready for Omaha Beach. Another was a Capt in Patton's army and another was on an oil tanker in the South Pacific. The 4th was actually a civilian at Oak Ridge but he always felt he had a lot to do with the end of the war with Japan. They are all gone now, along with my father, but I dearly loved them all and will always miss them.

13. K and R.
I've had relatives serve this country in all branches since WWI. They fought for this country even when some of the citizens treated them as if they were less than men. My relatives still serve while some in this nation treat the POTUS as less than a man. Despite everything, they were still patriotic and loyal to America.

I appreciate their service as I am grateful for the DU Veterans here.

14. For the fallen and their surviviors
"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.

Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.

And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

Major Michael Davis O'Donnell 1 January 1970 Dak To, Vietnam Listed as KIA February 7, 1978
