When it's raining, we can't fix the roof. When it's not raining, it doesn't need it.
At the present time, the Repubs and many Dems are arguing that we cannot "raise" taxes during a severe recession. Left unsaid is the fact that the severe recession was caused primarily by Republican policies. Instead, they say, we need to continue the same policies that caused the recession in the first place.
Of course, in 2001, the sun was shining and we had a surplus so we needed to give that money back to the people. By a bare majority, the Repubs voted to change the taxrates for 10 years. At that time, they would expire without debate.
But now the roof is leaking and we cannot fix it. It's a totally illogical argument.
It was a mistake to pass the taxcuts in 2001 and it would be a mistake to continue them in 2011.
All the taxcuts should expire, with those under $100K expiring by 1% per year until they reach the level of 2001. This would keep the taxpayers at the bottom from receiving any great shock from a "tax increase".
It is a time for everyone to sacrifice. The taxcuts received in 2001 and 2003 are needed to keep our country afloat and to restore credibility to our budget process. The party is over. It is time to pay the piper.
