DeMint: It's Michael Steele's fault GOP didn't win Senate

DeMint: It's Michael Steele's fault GOP didn't win Senate

by Jed Lewison

Jim DeMint, pointing fingers:

DeMint: Steele botched ground game, needs to be replaced

The lack of a well-organized voter mobilization effort by the Republican National Committee could have cost the GOP “a few Senate seats,” Sen. Jim DeMint suggested Sunday.

Partly as a result, the South Carolina Republican suggested he wouldn’t support a second term for controversial RNC Chairman Michael Steele, saying on "Fox News Sunday" “I’m looking for some alternatives right now.”

I'm not going to defend Steele's stewardship of the GOP, but it seems like Jim DeMint should be the last guy in the world to attack a fellow Republican's political savvy. Sure, Rand Paul won...but DeMinted GOPers like Christine O'Donnell, Joe Miller, Ken Buck, and Sharron Angle all lost, costing Republicans three seats. The point is DeMint has done a reasonably good job of connecting with the GOP primary electorate, which has moved far to the right-wing fringe. But as for the electorate at large, even though 2010 was the most favorable election for conservatives since 1994, DeMint's strategy still backfired.

3. Michael Steele, the RNC and RSCS all endorsed Mike Castle here in Delaware
Edited on Mon Nov-15-10 01:00 PM by LynneSin
and polls showed that Castle would have beat Chris Coons by 15-20points.

But Mr. DeMint - you and your teabagging crazies decided that Mike Castle was too moderate and ignored the fact that registered democrats far outnumber registered republicans in Delaware. You ignored the fact that Mike Castle is popular in Delaware with moderates from both parties and independants. And you ignored the fact that Christine O'Donnell had a very dubious history of saying really crazy things, mismanaging money and scamming from her campaign coffers.

So they way I see it - you could have won Delaware if you stuck with the moderate that can overcome the Dem/Rep gap instead of going for the lunatic nutjob that sane people saw right thru her. O'Donnell ended up losing by 17pts.

BTW I suspect if you had saner candidates in states like Nevada, Colorado and West Virginia you wouldn't have this issue.

6. the Pubs are secretly happy
that they didn't pick up the Senate...

If they had BOTH the House and Senate they'd lose their BIGGEST weapon they have. The BLAME GAME.

With just the House now they can roadblock/gridlock legislation... and if the economy or anything else sucks they can still blame the Senate and WH in '12.
