Teabaggers urging members to call Sens and ask them to vote against Food Safety Modernization Act
So I'm urging you all to call your Senators and ask them to vote FOR it. ;)

Bad eggs are in the news again with the recall this week of more than a quarter of a million of them from eight states because of Salmonella concerns. This recall is much smaller than the two massive recalls in August -- 550 million eggs in all -- but, to put it bluntly, one rotten egg in the food supply is one too many. At least 1,600 people fell ill in August.

And it isn't just eggs consumers need to worry about. In October, Texas health officials shut down a San Antonio-based produce and processing company after lab tests found Listeria in packaged celery products sold to hospitals, restaurants and schools. The investigation was begun after 10 people fell ill -- five of them died.

The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for food safety, but it needs more weapons in its arsenal to prevent contamination of the food we produce and eat. The laws regarding the FDA's food-safety responsibilities haven't been significantly updated in more than 70 years, according public-health and consumer-protection advocates. The FDA has a flawed inspection system and doesn't even have the authority to order a mandatory recall in contamination cases. It must first negotiate with the food producer. That's just plain dumb.

Congress can fix this, now. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, passed more than a year ago by the House, has been stalled in the Senate, where small growers have waged a campaign to stop it. One big piece of misinformation the growers have pushed is that the act would shut down organic farms.

No such thing is in the bill, which has enjoyed bipartisan support, is supported by President Obama and is endorsed by public-safety experts. The bill is set to finally come up for a Senate vote around Nov. 17 during the lame-duck session. The Senate shouldn't delay any longer on this legislation.

The act would require more monitoring for food infections and safety violations. It provides mandatory recall authority for the FDA and requires strong ``trace-back provisions'' to allow faster identification of the sources of tainted food and contamination sites. It also requires the FDA to put a search engine on its website to provide consumer information on recalled food.

Under the act, imported food would have to meet the same safety standards as food produced in the United States. Minimum standards based on science for safe production of fresh produce would be established. Also key, the FDA would have to consult with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state agriculture departments on regulations to prevent the contamination of fresh produce.

The teabaggers call the legislation "burdensome." You know what's burdensome? Botulism!

1. The teabaggers are such a bunch of creeps. People will die. And if it kills enough
people maybe that business goes out of business. And that is a kinda death...to the teabaggers at least. So that would be fair because it is an 'eye for an eye'. That notion is more than 2000 years old.

Did I say "What a bunch of creeps".

Have they really forgotten Upton Sinclair and The Jungle? I went to Catholic school and we had to read parts of it.

5. Indeed call your senator and demand that we have food
safety modernization. Looks like we'll be getting a work out calling the office of our congress critters for the next couple of years. May want to put their numbers on speed dial.

10. If they had their way, there would be no regulations at all
Companies would be able to sell contaminated food and face no consequences. They might not care about getting sick, but the rest of us do. I know my both my Senators will be voting yes, thankfully they have sense.
