Sen. Mark Warner (D?--VA) We "have to" raise the retirement age

(It's already gone up to 67 for me and others my age, so now I guess they will want us to keep working until we are 70 to get full benefits):

Virginia Senator Mark Warner, with visions of a someday presidential run undoubtedly still dancing in his head, wants The Village to know that he is a Very Serious Person who will happily spout zombie lies about Social Security.

, Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Mark Warner (D-VA) appeared on CNN’s State of the Union to discuss various political matters. At one point, the senators addressed the proposals made by the commission. Warner said he had to give the “commission a lot of credit for, you know putting out some hard choices. It’s kind of where the reality meets the campaign rhetoric about deficit reduction.” He then went on to say that because “folks at 25 or 30 years old today aren’t going to get Social Security at 65 or 67,” that we’re “going to have to raise the retirement age slowly, in a slow way that doesn’t affect folks 50, 55. He concluded that “this is just math. We’ve got to do some of these things."

Which is, of course, a zombie lie on many levels--that retirement age has to be lifted, that Social Security is in jeopardy at all, and that Social Security has anything to do with the deficit in the first place. Social Security is solvent until 2037--full benefits will be paid out until then, and 75% of benefits after, provided a few simple fixes are made. Those simple fixes--in particular, raising the payroll cap on Social Security taxes--do not have to include making life harder for older Americans, either by cutting their benefits, or by forcing them to work longer, and would make the program fully solvent for decades. Politics is war and they just don't realize it.

Mark Warner is a conservative Dem which is fine, we need some of them to maintain the majority in the Senate. The problem is that he just doesn't know how to play politics.

You KNOW the Republicans want to raise the retirement age and even if you do also, why come out and say it? Make the Republicans come out and say it first so they can be the ones to hang themselves. America has an aging population and any cuts to Social Security or raising the retirement age is political poison.

The sheer stupidity of some Dems is just mind boggling.

21. The sad part is everyone in congress has money

they don't have to worry about retirement. No one without money can afford to run for anything or has the contacts.

So basically we are all trusting a bunch of rich people to decide our future pensions, health, schools for our kids, everything...when they can afford private doctors, schools, investments....

Democrats are suppose to be the party for the little guy but that was back years ago like when Truman who was a farmer became president...same with the early presidents....our leaders now don't have a clue about real life...

People over age 65 often aren't in good health. I've known people who needed hip replacemnts before age 70!

I've known many a retiree who died before age 70. I guess that's the point, isn't it.
