In a new statement issued on behalf of Republican leadership, incoming House GOP Majority Leader Eric Cantor blasts the Democratic plan to have a vote on extending current tax rates on all income below $250,000:

"We will do everything in our power to stop President Obama and Speaker Pelosi from raising taxes on working families, small business people, and investors. Raising taxes in this environment is a non-starter for me and millions of American small business people who are struggling to keep the lights on and meet their payroll obligations.

"The legislation that Leader Hoyer announced he'd bring before the House would raise taxes on many small business people and families. That is a non-starter. A bipartisan majority of the House would support a clean bill to ensure that no American faces a tax increase in this difficult economic environment. We call on Speaker Pelosi and President Obama to allow all members of the House -- Republican and Democrat -- to vote on legislation that would prevent tax increases for every American."

This is one hell of a softball for Democrats: if Cantor really wants to do "everything" in his power to stop a tax hike for "working families" he'll vote yes on extending tax cuts to middle-income families. If he votes no, then he's the one trying to raise taxes -- not the other way around.

5. Bravo to Nancy and the House for having the BALLS that the WH doesnt..Here is hoping they dont cave

because my expectations is that the WH will be coming in trying to draw blood against its own party by strong arming Nancy to do whatever the repubs want...If they can pass this despite the WH meddling i will respect this Chamber as the only portion of government that hadnt sold us out...shame they will be the minority soon though.

Wellp, in the coming weeks we will find out what the repubs and the WH will be doing to fight Nancy on helping the middle-class.

I know that Obama wants to help the middle-class but my fear is he is too easily manipulated by the right and will just as easily and desparately seek to extend the tax cuts for the rich even though he has the upper-hand and can just request a middle-class tax cut...baffling but we've seen this spinelessness before.

Here's hoping for Nancy!!

23. My congressman is Cantor (ugh). He is entrenched due to gerrymandering.

I voted against him and for the Dem who had no chance in hell of winning, BUT I voted.

One lady who was laid off a couple of months after me from where I worked didn't bother to vote (I'm pretty sure she votes Republican). Like me, she's still out of work, and she's getting very depressed about her situation.

I explained what's happening (GOP blocking unemployment extensions and wanting to extend tax cuts for the rich.). I don't think she keeps up with the news much (more interested in watching "Dancing with the Stars" than the news (of course, it could be Faux News, in which case, it's practically the same thing!).

You'd think she would have gotten off her ass and voted, but then it would have most likely been one more vote for Cantor. WTF.

These people just today shot down a UI extension, putting thousands if not tens of thousands in sever jeopardy...during Thanksgiving and Christmas no less...makes Scrooge look like the greatest philanthropist of all time. 27. It makes me want to pull my hair out when I read

stupid statements like this from Republicans and the interviewers delve into what the "American people want". I wish they would hit them harder on facts and challenge them to explain just how it would hurt "small businesses".

If income over $200k is taxed at a rate that is 4 percentage points higher, we're talking about $12k for someone that makes $500k and $32k for a millionaire.

Also, wages and depreciation on capital investments are deductions for business income BEFORE it flows through to you personal tax return.

A millionaire that owns a business or businesses doesn't reinvest that $32k that they would have saved back into the business after they've already extracted it.

It seems clear to me - maybe I'm wrong - if there are any CPAs on here - I'd love to get your thoughts on this.
