I do not see an achievable path to re-election for Obama. He is going to lose too many of the states that flipped and got him elected in '08. Primary challenge or not, sub-moron opponent or not, Obama cannot win re-election without a massive U-turn in his politics and that is something we will NEVER see. He is what he is....a warmed over Blue-dog with no appetite for the hand-to-hand combat necessary to take down the slime bags on the right who will back down when challenged but will never do it on their own.

They are classic bullies and all that is needed is a leader willing to stand up to them and tell them to shut up and sit down while the grown ups discuss how to fix the current messes (1 - bad banks go under, 2- bad bankers go to jail, 3 - military wars of choice end, 4 - tax rates return to the pre-Bush levels for EVERYONE and then new middle class tax relief, deeper and broader than before, is instituted, 5 - sane fiscal policies for SS and Medicare/Medicaid that include taxes above the existing $106,000 threshold and means-tested benefits beyond $1M in annual NET income).

Five points, five fights that are needed, to save this country's most vulnerable citizens from the worst of the austerity measures the conservative bastards have planned for all but the most wealthy among the people. Tea partiers do not even recognize the irony in their harping on about "We, the people..." It all makes me sad in a way that crushes the spirit and saps the soul of the willingness to fight on.

This is Obama's legacy....unless he reverses course starting with these damnable Bush tax policies. Grow pair Mr. President....hit back and we will rally to you in numbers that will boggle the mind and sweep the electorate. Stay in the marsh that you have created and prepare to be beaten into a submissive one-term punching bag and eternal punchline for worst electoral stomping since Mondale in '84.

20. A little trivia

Only two presidents have been reelected by winning fewer states the second time than the first. If Obama wins reelection, he will probably be the third since it's hard to see him winning more states than he did the first time.

if he wins Virginia again then he wins a lot of states he won in 2008. He will win most if not all the blue states and so he only needs a couple of the red or purple states he won in 2008. It's really not hard to see how Obama could win re-election and he's actually in a better position than many other presidents after only two years in office including Clinton and Reagan.

We were red, then we were purple, then we were blue, now were reddish purple. The Republicans won the Senate seat that was open, the 2 House seats and the State legislature this election. We still have a Democratic governor and half a Democrat Shaheen in the Senate. I can see this state voting for a Republican presidential candidate. (Seriously considering a move over the border to Vermont.)

2012 is off a ways and the main factor next cycle will be the economy, plain and simple. I'm in PA, a battle ground state and being a realist the momentum as I see it right now is with the pukes. I worked as a poll watcher this time and my very dependable blue voting district I estimate had about 50% registered dems vote puke with a good turnout. My state house representative is Keith McCall (D) who is the outgoing house speaker (he is retiring) and McCall is not happy with some of the item Gov Rendell is pushing for the lame duck session in Harrisburg. Keith is a good guy and his unhappiness is for a reason I suspect as I expect McCall to re-emerge in the near future with new political ambitions.

US Sen. Bob Casey Jr. also will have to craft some explanations because he ran as a moderate last time and will not win 2012 as a liberal, sorry to say. Some of his votes are going to haunt him with the PA electorate, not saying it's right, just gazing into my crystal ball as asked by the OP. I have said it before and will repeat, I expect Casey to be moderate this session to the consternation of many of us here on DU. I'm of the opinion that Casey is in real trouble going into 2012 but again, it depends on the economy and who the repugs run for the seat.

We need to put together a workable plan for the economy in PA. Running based of real or perceived puke mistakes will be an actual mistake for us. If the local economy improves under the pukes next year we are going to have a long hard time of it I'm afraid to say. Needless to say, now is the time to act, not wait a year and then react.
