Elizabeth Warren Helped Shoot Down Bill That Would Have Sped Foreclosures

Elizabeth Warren Helped Shoot Down Bill That Would Have Sped Foreclosures, Calendar Shows

Elizabeth Warren was the first senior Obama administration official to recognize the potentially incendiary impact of a bill that would have made it significantly easier for mortgage companies to foreclose on homes, and her subsequent warnings played a crucial role in persuading the President to veto the measure, according to freshly released documents and people familiar with the deliberations.

The disclosure that Warren was instrumental in halting a bill that would have streamlined the foreclosure process comes as she confronts fierce criticism from Republicans on Capitol Hill for the way she was appointed to construct a new consumer financial protection bureau, and characterizations that she is inclined to take an overly punitive tack with Wall Street.

5. Well, she has stood up AGAINST Wall Street and
that's more than the president has done, so far.

And if, according to the article, she's the one who persuaded him to do what he should have known to do anyway from the start, then maybe she's more on top of the issues than he is. That wouldn't hurt either.

Let's put it this way, Doc. If the primaries were held tomorrow, I probably wouldn't vote against Elizabeth Warren.

Is this post sarcastic? It's hard to tell around here sometimes.

You do know that it was Obama who appointed her as an adviser, got the consumer financial protection agency in the financial bill, got the bill passed, appointed her to head the new agency, and that Obama is who actually vetoed the bill. Right?

"That's more than the president has done, so far."

Um, no. Since she was working for Obama on his behalf, it's exactly what OBAMA'S administration has done.

And the reason Presidents have a large staff is so that their staff can stay on top of issues in their areas of expertise. No single human being can be on top of the details about every issue in the world that a President has to deal with.

You said, and I quote:

"She will be Interim Director. Period. If you think that position is powerless, you're very, very confused"

Your words.

Now a few months later you are here saying that this position is just a token, powerless one.

But I guess that explains everything. You don't actually believe in anything, you're just a partisan shill that will take any position that is convenient at the time.

She can even make some people completely and totally oblivious to sarcasm and satire! All with a wave from her Fairy Godmother Wand!

Don't you think it's incredible how she was able to singlehandedly veto a bill??? I mean, I thought only Presidents could veto bills!!! But apparently, Warren now has that power, somehow, magically!!!

That beetwasher person sounds like a total asshole (if in fact it's even a person and not some sort of robot from the future). I mean who is he to not acknowledge Warren's wonderous magical abilities?! I bet that jerk would even try to claim Obama should get some credit for actually vetoing the bill and appointing someone like Warren in the first place. Some people just can't give credit where credit is due. What a jerk.

I wonder what happened in those 3 months. You know if you actually believed in something you might not have these moments of such pure hypocrisy. Try it out sometime.

Do you know anyone like that? Yeah, I'd say he's a real jerk alright. And probably incredibly stoopid too.

Everyone who knows a damn thing about anything knows Obama is corporate stooge who would never appoint someone like Warren to a position with any real influence. That's why it's so nifty that she has these awesome magic powers to get things accomplished all by herself and despite that corporate stooge Obama who's always getting in the way of progress!

Everyone knows the Corporate Stooge Obama would never give her a position with any type of real responsibility. His Corporate Troll masters would never allow such a thing. Are YOU now doubting that Obama has been corrupted by the Corporate Trolls and actually gave Warren a position with some actual significance???? That's SACRILEGE!!! She CLEARLY has paranormal abilities. It's the only way to explain how she could personally veto the bill in question.

88. How did she get influance? It sure as hell wasn't thanks to you
Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 09:59 AM by no limit
while you belitted people that fought for her by drawing lines in the sand people kept up the pressure. Those people were afraid that Obama would again sell out to corporate interests and not appoint her. Just as he sold out to big pharma and just as he sold out to wall street. And in the end the white house didn't appoint her, they gave her an interm position. Some people questioned how much power she would have in that interm position, you called those people naive and confused. Now that we see that she does in fact have actual influance in that position (which is great)you are here telling us she actually has no power and her position is only a token one.

This discussion started when you made a unfunny and unintelligent "joke" about 24 dimensional chess that tried to minimize criticism of how much influance corporate america has had over the Obama administration. But the fact is, which I pointed out to you, that corporate america clearly has alot of influance. That doesn't mean Obama checks with his "corporate overlords" every time he makes the decision to veto or sign a bill. Or every time he makes an appointment. But it simply means that this influance from corporate america is there. What I don't understand is why you would be here minimizing the influance true progressives have in this administration, however scarce that influance might be. I don't think you truly thought your position on Warren out here. As I said above. If you actually believed in something, instead of simply waving the pom poms, you wouldn't have to try so hard not to be a hypocrite.

Now I know you are going to post a reply in the form of "sarcasm" that sounds like a 4th grader would write which doesn't actually address anything I said nor add anything intelligent to this discussion. So if that's the case I'm going to go waste my energy on something more useful.

they handed out the placards and no one in our delegation had ever heard of this guy, nor could anyone pronounce his name! We had to ask how to chant his name!!!!! And there were all kinds of screw ups by the gallery on his name.

Then after he spoke, there were people all around us telling us to cheer loudly ..and they kept pushing us to cheer louder and louder!! It was surreal.

Then there was his party that night,.the only "free" ($$) party at the entire convention.

I have never gotten an answer to ..who paid for this party ...when all other parties cost big bucks to attend??

14. Thankfully
Wall Street reform passed and the President appointed a friend and advisor to head the agency.

Elizabeth Warren

"It has been more than 20 months since the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression, and we are still living under the same set of rules we had in place before the meltdown. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, Chairman Frank, and Chairman Dodd, that's about to change. Members of the House-Senate conference committee and their staffs worked through the night to produce the strongest set of Wall Street reforms in three generations. They created a strong, independent consumer agency that will have the tools to rein in industry tricks and traps and to cut out the fine print. For the first time, there will be a financial regulator in Washington watching out for families instead of banks."

Fighting to Protect Consumers

Over the past several weeks, the President and I have had extensive conversations about the vital importance of consumer financial protection.

The President asked me, and I enthusiastically agreed, to serve as an Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He has also asked me to take on the job to get the new CFPB started—right now. The President and I are committed to the same vision on CFPB, and I am confident that I will have the tools I need to get the job done.

President Obama understands the importance of leveling the playing field again for families and creating protections that work not just for the wealthy or connected, but for every American. The new consumer bureau is based on a pretty simple idea: people ought to be able to read their credit card and mortgage contracts and know the deal. They shouldn’t learn about an unfair rule or practice only when it bites them—way too late for them to do anything about it. The new law creates a chance to put a tough cop on the beat and provide real accountability and oversight of the consumer credit market. The time for hiding tricks and traps in the fine print is over. This new bureau is based on the simple idea that if the playing field is level and families can see what’s going on, they will have better tools to make better choices.

If the CFPB can succeed at leveling the playing field, we can go a long way toward repairing a gaping hole in the budgets of millions of families. But nobody has ever thought or argued that the consumer bureau can fix everything. Lost jobs, stagnant incomes, rising costs for college, dwindling retirement savings—there’s a lot of work to be done.

When she was 16, my grandmother, Hannie Reed, drove a wagon in the Oklahoma land rush. Her mother had died, so she was up front with her little brothers and sisters bouncing around in the back. When I was growing up, she talked about life on the prairie, about marrying my grandfather and making a living building one-room schoolhouses, about getting wiped out in the Great Depression. She was hit with hard challenges throughout her life, but the moral of her stories was always the same: she would solve her problems one at a time by pulling up her socks and getting to work.

It’s time for all of us to pull up our socks and get to work.

19. And your point is?
Harry Truman, by the way, was a haberdasher from Missouri who got into Washington by the most traditonal political methods out there. Who would have expected that he would evolve into the kind of President he turned into?

This woman has many more positive qualities than HST ever did so if it was magic dust that put her where she was, so be it. More likely it was having a substantial resume and the passion to do a job that regular politicians would avoid like the bubonic plague.

42. In addition to the "substantial resume and passion to do a job"...
Warren was SMART enough to make her case in public.
Her appearances on the pundit shows and Jon Stewart were classics.
She presented her case in honest, unambiguous English, and was NOT afraid to call a Crook a "Crook."
Her willingness to tell Americans Yes. Wall Street is screwing YOU won her an army of passionate advocates who lobbied FOR her appointment.

If we had MORE Working Class Advocates with the courage to offend Big Money, and bring their case directly to The People in unequivocal, unambiguous language, we wouldn't be in such bad shape.

"I welcome their hatred!"---FDR

46. "Mr. President: It may seem like this bill merely says that notaries are valid across state lines...
...but your enemies will portray this as authorizing bank fraud".

...Which is exactly how it was played out. Sometimes the message behind a bill has a lot more meanings than a bill itself could have in it.

47. Mr. Boppers: This bill may sound like it's completely innocuous....
But, what it will do is totally, retroactively legalize bank fraud.

Which was exactly how it was SUPPOSED to play out, but that evil witch Elizabeth blew the whistle on us.

Nice try.

51. Thank Goodness She Could Use Her Magic Powers To Persuade Obama To Listen To Her!!!!
Because we all know that evil corporate tool Obama would never veto this bill unless Warren was able to use her magic fairy wand to break the Corporate Troll spell that enraptured his weak, lilly livered soul. His Corporate troll masters would never allow him to do such a thing.

Thankfully, Warren was able to time it perfectly and transport in from fairy land just as the bill was placed in front of Obama. She then used her Magic Fairy Godmother wand to place a spell of enchantment on him and she sweet talked him into vetoing the bill. I have it on good authority that that's how it went down.

56. Most likely: Mr. President, this bill which was first introduced and passed
by Congress years before the mortgage foreclosure crisis with bi-partisan support is well intended but could very well have the unintended effect of making it difficult to pursue claims of notarization fraud arising out of the foreclosure crisis. It needs to be vetoed so that we can work with Congress to revise the bill to avoid that unintentional effect.

74. Exhibit A.
Are you alleging that notaries are frauds, *therefore* the banks were defrauding people by trusting notaries in other states?

You're saying this was intentional deception, to trust notaries?

50. You Obama Supporters Are Unreal!! I Mean Now Obama Is Responsible For Warren's Magical Abilities?
Edited on Thu Nov-25-10 11:16 PM by Beetwasher
Pffft! I mean, seriously! How is Obama to be credited with Warren's ability to magically appear in DC at her whim and influence policy with her magic pixie dust?

You'd think Obama appointed her and vetoed bills or something. It's just like you Obama fans to give Obama all the credit for Warren's magic powers. Everyone knows Obama's been corrupted by the corporate trolls and only Warren can save the universe.

63. Bravo! And especially don't forget Jennifer Brunner as well
for sounding the bell to the public in the first place and organizing the WH calling campaign.
She's responsible for the media alerting and the rain of hail on Washington on this one by ordinary citizens. Well done, both of them.

Documents released Wednesday show that Warren met or spoke with at least eight state officials leading a 50-state investigation into possibly-fraudulent mortgage documentation practices.

The state attorneys general, secretaries of state and bank supervisors are probing the way in which major mortgage companies have pushed through thousands of foreclosure cases at a time, as if on a factory assembly line, by short-cutting the required documentation process.

67. The really sad part of this...
...is that she is simply doing her job.
Finding a Democrat who is doing his/her job is NOW a cause for celebration.

Doing the Job (representing US) SHOULD be so common it would not be noticed.
We need 1,000 Elizabeth Warrens in DC,
so many that they would be boring!
