Steve King calls Obama 'very very urban' on House floor

Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, referred to President Obama as "very, very urban," while charging that as a senator he gave special favor to African American farmers who were victims of government discrimination. In case anybody missed his meaning in a speech on the House floor Monday evening, King emphasized the word "urban," drawing the first syllable out.

King is referring to legislation created to settle what is known as the Pigford case.

King noted that "Bobby Scott of Virginia and others" introduced legislation in the House that would expand the government's responsibility in the settlement; Scott is African American.

King then went on: "Figure this out, Madame Speaker: We have a very, very urban Senator, Barack Obama, who has decided he's going to run for president, and what does he do? He introduces legislation to create a whole new Pigford claim."

On November 30, 2010 Congressman Steve King, from Iowa’s Fifth Congressional District, referred to President Obama as, and I quote, “very, very, urban.” This was an obvious racist attempt to somehow diminish our President. Thankfully Congressman King didn’t use the word he actually wanted to use but his sentiment was clear.
Earlier this year Congressman King said this about President Obama; “…he has a default mechanism in him that breaks down the side of race, on the side that favors the black person.”
I know that over the past decade our country has become so divided that ignorant comments from both sides often get lost in the 24 hour news cycle cacophony but blatantly racist comments, like those from Congressman King, are both un-American and unacceptable!
Because of this, I am asking you and your fellow Representative, to immediately begin House censure proceedings against Congressman King.

Because of the electoral college rural, less densely populated states have more votes per person than the dense urban ones. The House may be more or less proportional, but every state has two senators, no matter how big. As a Californian, my individual vote counted for less in 2008 than that of someone in Iowa, and considerably less than someone in Alaska.
