13. The DLC as an organization has been irrelevant for years.
They used to have a lot of control, and it was their quest for control that I didn't like--as opposed to their ideology.

This thread is funny though, and you make a good point! A lot of good public servants were members of the organization at some point or another.

15. It's amazing how ignorant many on the left are about the DLC
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 06:41 PM by Clintonista2
As I have previously pointed out, I'm probably further to the left than most of DU on an ideological level, and I certainly don't agree with the DLC on most things, but people use it as the boogeyman from hell. I've been called a "DLC-corporatist" by somebody with an Al Gore avatar!

27. it's just shorthand for corporatist sell-out corrupt money-grubbing fake democrats
whose only allegiance is to those who grease their palms in return for legislation and "deals" favoring capitalist predator pig corporations who have no allegiance to anything at all except the almighty dollar, never mind who they have to stomp over to get it.

19. They can't be kicked out. The Democratic Party doesn't have any members.

Like the Republican Party, it's not a membership organization with membership cards, membership meetings, monthly dues, etc.,

32. Like I said, the Democratic Party isn't a membership organization.
You're in a caucus. Anyone can form and "join" a "caucus" or political faction in a political party.

My point is about membership rights, duties, obligations in the national Democratic party and its subordinate affiliates.

So .... how many members does the Democratic Party of California and the national Democratic Party have, how does one become a member of the national Democratic party, does the Democratic Party receive membership dues, does it have membership cards, does it have democratic membership meetings which control the policies and activities of the Democratic Party, does it have a statement of principals and aims people must agree with in order to be eligible for membership and what are the rights and duties of Democratic Party members for starters?

The fundamental question is .... Does the Democratic Party mainly function as an organization set-up to elect individuals to public office, much like the Republican Party, or is it a real mass political organization democratically controlled by members?

The following is the closest thing you will find regarding Democratic Party membership requirement that's included in the Charter and By-laws of the Democratic Party of the United States.

"The Democratic Party of the United States shall be open to all who desire to support the
Party and who wish to be known as Democrats."

You'll notice that no reference is made to party membership applications or requirements .... all you have to do is say "I'm a Democrat" and bingo you're somehow part of the Democratic Party .... without any rights, duties or obligations!

Believe whatever the hell you want and you're welcomed into the big non-membership tent of the Democratic Party!

The idea that Leiberman or any other a-hole can be thrown out of the Democratic Party is nonsense. How can they be thrown out of something they are not a member of? All Leiberman is required to do is proclaim himself a Democrat .... well he doesn't even have to do that> He's an independent and is part of the Democratic Senatorial caucus!

30. Not true
The DLC featured Dean on their web site many times, up until the point when Dean decided to play to the cheap seats in his presidential campaign. As governor, he was a fiscally conservative, pro-business moderate who fought with the left wing of his own party as well as with VT's third party progressives.

31. Not only did he have to fight with the left,
he also had to fight a self annointed Presidential wannabe who wanted to change the Primary rules after the race started.

Howard Dean is consistent, if there is one thing I am sad about it is Howard Dean having no role in the Cabinet of the President. His strength under fire was amazing.

33. They can't be thrown out of a party they are not members of.

All they have to do is call themselves Democrats under the Democratic party national charter. And they can continue to call themselves Democrats no matter how reactionary they might be or become!
