Statement by President Barack Obama on Removal of HEU from Ukraine

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
December 31, 2010
Statement by President Barack Obama on Removal of HEU from Ukraine

“I congratulate President Yanukovych on the recent shipment of highly enriched uranium from Ukraine for secure disposal in Russia, which advances a top priority for my administration and for global security. This action brings us all one step closer to securing all vulnerable nuclear materials, as President Yanukovych and I and 45 other world leaders pledged to do this April at the Nuclear Security Summit. The low enriched uranium and nuclear safety equipment provided to Ukraine in connection with this shipment will support Ukraine’s development of safe and secure nuclear energy. These actions represent continued Ukrainian leadership in making sure that nuclear weapons never fall into the hands of a terrorist, and working toward a world without nuclear weapons.”

The President gets credit for his part in keeping the treaties moving and as an important participant and providing leadership in this area... but come on... *everything* is not due to him.

I have relatives in Ukraine. In this case this was between Russia and Ukraine. Are you ready to give Putin credit (not that I am advocating giving Putin much praise, given his human rights record, but this was more his work than Obama's). Yanukovich (the Ukrainian President) is closer to Russia than the US.

6. did I say that everything was due to him?...
Edited on Sat Jan-01-11 05:20 PM by awoke_in_2003
He had to play a part to make it happen, and he played that part. When the president is wrong I say so. When he is right I say so. I don't go around dogpiling the man every chance I get.

on edit: changed "do" to "due"

7. there's a surplus of people who won't give him a shred of credit for anything he does.

if he personally delivered a gold bar to every DUer.. half the joint would be complaining that he didn't use alchemy to make gold weigh less, and that he was in the pocket of a reaganite cabal.... whose goal was to cause back trouble in americans...
