WASHINGTON — DC Water has offered to help new Speaker of the House John Boehner in his effort to cut the U.S. House of Representatives office budgets, according to a press release.
It was reported last year that the House spent $190,000 on bottled water during the first quarter alone in 2010.
To help eliminate this expenditure, DC Water’s General Manager George S. Hawkins delivered to Speaker Boehner a letter of support and 10 sample reusable water bottles, with an offer to supply each member of Congress with their own reusable water bottles, the release stated.
Hawkins’ letter encourages elimination of the bottled water expenditure for environmental reasons as well.
“Water is a resource that is essentially free at the tap,” wrote Hawkins. “If fiscal responsibility is your aim, I should point out that our water costs about a penny a gallon. Bottled water costs hundreds of times more. Choosing tap also protects the environment from the harms of plastic bottles, and helps support investment in the nation’s drinking water infrastructure.”
