Palm Springs man charged with threatening CongressmanA Palm Springs man is set to be arraigned in Riverside federal court this afternoon on federal charges that
he threatened to kill a member of Congress.Charles Turner Habermann, 32, is charged with one count of threatening a federal official in connection with voicemails he left for Seattle Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Seattle. If convicted of the one count, Habermann could face up to 10 years in prison.
Habermann also has been questioned about threats against an unnamed congresswoman and an unnamed California assembly member.He was arrested Wednesday morning by FBI agents at his home in Palm Springs. Federal prosecutors have not filed any charges related to threats in California.

According to the transcript of one call to McDermott's office,
Habermann said, "He thinks he can steal money from people and give it away to losers and get away with it." It continues, "I'll (expletive) hunt that guy down and I'll (expletive) get rid of him."
In the other call, Habermann allegedly said, "If he ever (expletive) around with my money, ever the (expletive) again, I'll (expletive) kill him, OK."
One voicemail said the founding fathers would "blow his brains out." Habermann also called McDermott a piece of garbage.
"And I'll tell you right now garbage belongs in the trash and that's where he's gonna end up."During an interview with the FBI at his home in Palm Springs, Habermann told authorities he had been drinking when he left the
voicemails.
Man arrested over threats to kill McDermottHabermann said he never intended to actually harm McDermott, saying he had "too much to lose" — referring to a $3 million trust fund, according to the complaint.In an interview Wednesday, McDermott said he'd reported Habermann's threats to law enforcement out of concern for his staff's safety.
