1. I'm fine with OTC programs and the like...
...but yeah, considering the aggresive tactics used by some recruiters, keep them away from college campuses.

2. The entire purpose of the military recruitment ban on campuses...
was based on discrimination. It violated the universities' non-discrimination policies. Now that that is gone, it would be an infringement of free speech to deny them access.

This is not a big deal. College students are not dopey lemmings who would easily fall victim to recruiting pitches. Nor is ROTC a threat to all. There are all kinds of clubs on campuses; for those who want it, I see no reason now to ban it.

I am fine with allowing the return of military recruitment and ROTC now that the discrimination has been removed.

3. It's copping to the fact that other funding options will inexorably be pulled
...from the middle class. The "cannon fodder" route is the one option the coporadoes are willing to leave open for the serf classes.

And Obama's in no position to buck his bosses.

4. Don't we want smart people in the military?
Hey I don't get why people want to join, but why should we prevent people from learning about it?

9. I don't think you understand why recruiters have been banned from certain campuses.
He was referring to bans that have to do with the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. That has now been repealed so the reason for the ban no longer exists.

10. Remove the financial incentive to join the military, and stop Presidential
excursions into undeclared wars, then you can recruit everyone you want to recruit. As long as poor kids see the military as the only way to get to college, they have no real choice.

All Jessica Lynch ever really wanted to do was to teach kindergarten.

If I knew for a fact that the military would be used only when needed for the vital defense of this country, then I would have no qualms about any of my kids joining up. Seeing them killed or mutilated for oil doesn't count.

15. Seriously? Remove financial incentives for joining the military?
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 03:38 PM by phleshdef
Thats one of the most horridly, unprogressive and unpatriotic ideas I've ever heard. I'm all for staying out of unnecesary wars. I'm all for dramatically reducing the disgusting amount of unnecessary defense spending. But never, ever, ever could I support taking away much deserved financial rewards for those that chose to serve. We can provide alternatives for those in poverty that feel like there is no other way and in fact, we have provided some alternatives all ready. But we can do that without pissing all over those who do want to join the military and do want to receive the benefits for education and other things that come with it.

Bullshit like this is why the Republicans get away with acting like they own the title of "troop supporting patriots".

13. ROTC programs are actually really good things for a lot of universities.
I had a lot of friends who loved it and really took it seriously. I see nothing wrong with that. A lot of people in the military will tell you it build discipline and you feel as though you have a purpose and take on a strong responsibility. Besides that it helps with costs and I see more people pro than against it.
