7. If he wants to do something big it will have to be on something easier
to negotiate than twitter. I signed up and I absolutely hate it. Slow, unclear who is tweeting, story spread out over many pages.

15. thank you for the answer
then they should find another way to calculate ratings, not everyone has comcast.
I stream MSNBC all the time.

Ed, Keith and Rachel's ratings are allot higher than they are saying I bet.

4. They deserve it, but we don't
Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 02:58 PM by Armstead
I have mixed feelings about that. I was really sorry to see Olbermann go, and it sounds like mergermania was a factor (despite their denials).

I also think Lawrence O'Donnell is no Keith, nor a Rachael or even a Big Eddie. He has an issue with charisma, and he has keith's arrogance without the intellect or personality.

But I'd also hate to see a "liberal media" outlet get trounced. MSNBC is still the only port in a storm, in terms of progressive perspectives getting into the Mainstream media.

So I'd rather see them bounce back, despite the fact that they may deserve a trouncing.

33. One does not need a Neilson Box...
if you use cable or satellite, they know what you are tuned in to. Neilson went down long ago as a baseline, since most things come through cable ready or through a box, they monitor everything, a cable ready TV w/basic cable will reflect back to the provider what is being watched/tuned in.

I've been to the back rooms of Cable One to check their fire suppression systems, they have massive feeds and TV's all over the place; the computers are taking it all in, some stuff is actually on a wall of screens. For that matter, even the people at the front desks that take payments have access to your info and what you've watched. How do you think they know to charge you for the movies you've purchased through them or why programming changes from time to time?

Those links are two way, most people don't even realize that their TV is actually a transmitter as well, and there is development going on to actually retrieve images from it when it is "dormant"...and no, this is not tin-foil hat stuff, it began with baseline marketing procedures, and proceeded from there. Data gathering is a huge business, and most people don't realize the extent of it.

36. That matters not. Nielsons are used to set ad rates. So, in the context of punishment...
...the only people we're punishing are Rachel, Ed, Cenk, Lawrence and us. And the American citizens who happen across MSNBC and learn something.

37. That's the point behind all of the data collected by cable/satellite...
far more reliable than Neilson in setting rates in varying locations.

I'm actually surprised Neilson is still in business, unless they tapped into the cable/satellite #'s. Neilson uses statistics, (notoriously abused), the others use hard data from everyone that uses their services.

40. Which means MSNBC loses no Nielson-set advertising revenue when non-Nielson homes shut it off...
...but Rachel, Ed and the rest get damaged by cable/satellite data that shows steadily declining viewership.

That's brilliant. :eyes:

41. Let me get this straight...
I just want to know; regardless of Neilson; if there is raw data shows x of people are watching say Rachel, and y people are watching something else, the #'s are there w/o any statistical innuendo. They are raw numbers tuned into a specific show at a a specific time. Say 190,000 people watch the first 30 minutes of Rachel, then 2500 of them change to something else, the numbers, raw data reflect that. There is no way to skew it statistically, (there might be a question of the ages of those watching), but the numbers of sets tuned in to a specific show are there. Even if your TV is off, and your tuner is set to QVC, it will record you are watching QVC. Only if you shut off or disconnect the satellite box is data no longer transferred on a two way connection. The system was designed to ensure that popular programming would dominate, and it was programmed into the system. Neilson is old school, this is real time viable data transfer.

Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 10:22 AM by Phx_Dem
to boost its low ratings. If liberals stop watching, what's left? Conservatives. And the last thing we need is more conservative cable shows.

11. Big Ed is another blowhard and got viewers because he came after Tweety. This new time slot
puts him against primetime network shows, he will be the big loser. O'Donnel is not magnetic enough and will not be able to carry Olbermans time slot.

Rachel should have been moved up to Keiths's spot and O'Donnel should have taken her open spot.

35. No, because he speaks before he thinks. He storms out of MSNBC threatening to blow the place up.
He is not taken seriously by anybody. He is a caricature of a news man. He is an entertainer unlike Rachel Maddow who has credibility, she is able to book more people on her show because they
know she is going to interview them, not lecture and talk over them.

42. Both are correct in their own way
Ratings were not down much. In fact if I remember correctly a couple of the shows were up a bit. IMHO KC Star blew the story a bit out of proportion.

And this week with the situation in Egypt it will be hard to judge. CNN usually upticks a bit when you have a big ongoing turmoil like this.

When situation gets back to a normal political domestic story then we will be better able to tell.

I was suprised last week MSNBC didn't have a big hit, but they seemed to only dropoff a bit.

I watch the ratings daily and I doubt except for maybe the 6PM hour that MSNBC execs were sweating the ratings.
