Wassup with the impending 2 billion dollar Presidential campaign? Isn't anyone...
else bothered that Obama has already raised a billion-- with two years yet to go-- and the other guys are sending out the begging letters.

And then there's all those House and Senate races, with a few governors thrown in. And state and local races.

(Maybe this is a scheme to juice the GDP just before the election???)

1. Proof? Or do you have a crystal ball? And no, it doesn't bother me that We the People fund it.
After all, contrary to those who enjoy pushing false memes, the overwhelming majority of donations to Obama 2008 came in amounts less than $200. I should know, since I was one of those folks.

18. That depends on how you define "majority of donations".

2. I find it funny that he will raise more money that is needed to fund the HIV meds program I posted
about. There is something really wrong w/ that. But I don't think it's near 2billion dollars.

6. I find it revolting, but it's true...
google "billion dollar presidential" and see what comes up.

Obama has already raised just about a billion, and there's two years to go.

5. NPR, NY Times, Wall St. Journal, Christian Science Monitor, Reuters...
it's all over the place. I heard it several times on NPR and read it in the Times.

Goggle "billion dollar presidential" and see what comes up.

(Why is this a good thing, though?)

7. Why is this a good thing, you ask? Two words:
Edited on Fri Feb-18-11 04:28 PM by GoCubsGo
Citizens United. He's going to need every dollar he can get, because the GOP is going have a bottomless pit of money from their corporate masters to use to run against him and other Democrats.

19. I don't like it, either.
But, it is what it is, unfortunately. The only thing that will cure this kind of crap is public financing of elections, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

21. Exactly. And 1 billion may not be enough for our side. And that is just for the Presidential race
how much will the biggest corporations shell out to win house and senate races too? Could hit 5 Billion when all is said and done.

Heck, just the oil and gas industry could probably throw several billion toward the GOP Presidential and congressional races.

8. Where are you getting your info?
Where does it say he raised a billion? Anything close to what you're talking about is referring to the possibility of two candidates, not one raising $2 billion total. Can you back anything you claimed?

if you have a problem with it, get your own that contradicts this.

I googled the line just as so many here asked and found NO link to substantiate the claim for a 2 billion dollar race...

Here's a link from the Examiner...

http://www.examiner.com/populist-in-national/2012-could-mark-the-first-2-billion-dollar-presidential-election

and from NPR

http://www.npr.org/2011/02/18/133809150/2012-the-year-of-the-billion-dollar-campaigns

ALSO NO where does it say he already raised a billion.. Although I for one find nothing wrong with OUR president having a serious war chest against the republicans.

All of this is just political speculation...

13. How about...
"The 2012 presidential election is shaping up to be a multibillion-dollar contest. President Obama's re-election committee is expected to raise at least $1 billion, and Republicans have high hopes that their nominee will reach the 10-figure level as well."

or:

"I think we are going to see the first $2 billion presidential election in the nation's history," said former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle. "Two billion may be conservative." And that's not even including primaries and conventions."

Those quotes were in the articles YOU linked to.

It's all conjecture.

And since 700 million (which is what the last race fundraiser high-point was) is a FAR cry from 2 Billion. That's all I am saying... Conjecture. ALL Conjecture. Show me where in the article it says President Obama has already raised 1 Billion?

23. Indeed, I don't think Obama is even accepting donations for 2012 yet
As far as I know the only money Obama has for 2012 is the extra money he had left after the 2008 election (not sure how much it is, but I'd guess over 10 million dollars).

I just did a quick search on google for donating money to Obama, and all that came up were a couple of news stories about people/groups telling people to donate money to defeat Obama in 2012. I also checked www.BarackObama.com, and didn't see a link anywhere to donate money to his campaign, the only way on his website to give him money is to buy something in the store section of the site.

22. Obama has not raised a dime for 2012 yet.
If he had it would have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission and there are no such reports. You can go to their website fec.gov and find any fund raising reports for any candidate. Obama has not even filed a declaration to run which he would have to do to start raising money legally.

25. OFA won't use all that on the campaign.
They'll give some of it to the Congressional and Senate races.

And if we're not going to have public funding, let's do as Bruno Gianelli says and run in the same election as everyone else.

26. Competing with the Koch brothers isn't cheap
Until the Supreme Court reverses Buckley v. Valeo and decides that money doesn't equal speech, campaigns are just going to get more expensive every cycle.
