1. Having had Dengue I got a chill just thinking about it

BTW one of the side effects of climate change is that the inhabital area that the mosquito that carries Dengue increases several miles every year and is slowly expanding into Europe.

6. Actually there are 4 distinct serogroups of Dengue, so you CAN

become infected more than once if you travel extensively to areas where more than one Dengue group is circulating. Had you been infected with Dengue 1, for instance, you would be immune to a future Dengue1 infection, but not to Dengue 2-4.

8. Yes I heard that but isn't there one that accounts for 80% of infections
Still better than malaria that is the infection that just keeps on giving.

10. Actually no, worldwide, although in certain regions one serotype
may predominate. In the Americas, for instance, (especially Mexico) DEN-1,2 and 4 have almost an equal split... But in the Pacific Islands, for example there has been more of a predominance of one over another...

7. Malaria is a mosquito born parasite. Dengue is a mosquito born virus.

Most develop so, called breakbone fever and rash, which can be prolonged, but eventually recover. However, young children and some adults will develop Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, which can be fatal.

9. affectionately called "Break bone" fever for reasons that are clear after you have had it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_Fever

The great joy of this disease is that people of European stock that spend extended time in the tropics are likely to get it.

The local population gets infected as small children and have a mild fever.

If you get it then you can expect nearby locals to come by from time to time to watch the fat white guy writhe in pain and proves a welcome break from the TV.
