POLL: Public "Relieved" By bin Laden's Death, Obama's Job Approval Rises to 56% (+9).
Public "Relieved" By bin Laden's Death, Obama's Job Approval Rises
Overview

The public is reacting to the killing of Osama bin Laden with relief, happiness and pride. And Americans overwhelmingly credit the U.S. military and the CIA for the success of the operation.

An overnight survey of 654 adults, conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press and The Washington Post finds that 72% say they feel “relieved” by Osama bin Laden’s death, while 60% feel “proud” and 58% say they are “happy.” Far fewer, just 16%, say the news of bin Laden’s death make them feel “afraid.”

Barack Obama’s job approval rating has jumped in the wake of bin Laden’s killing. In the one-day survey, 56% say they approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president while 38% disapprove. Last month, Obama’s job rating was about evenly divided – 47% approved, 45% disapproved. Obama has gotten about the same boost in job approval as did former President Bush in the days after the U.S. military’s capture of Saddam Hussein in December 2003. Following Saddam’s capture, Bush’s rating rose from 50% to 57%. (A more comprehensive survey will be conducted May 5-8 to follow up on these preliminary reactions to the death of bin Laden and Obama’s job performance.)

Obama gets far more credit from the public than does George W. Bush for bin Laden’s killing. But the military and the CIA and other intelligence agencies receive much more credit – fully 86% say the U.S. military deserves a “great deal” of credit and 66% say the same about the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

U.S. views of Obama improve with bin Laden killing: Reuters poll
1:18pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The killing of Osama bin Laden has given President Barack Obama a popularity boost, with 39 percent of Americans telling a Reuters/Ipsos online poll that their views of the president's leadership skills have improved.

Forty-two percent of respondents also said they now had a higher opinion of Obama's handling of the war on terrorism. The poll findings, released on Tuesday, show a lift in Obama's standing, hurt recently by high gasoline prices.

Thirty-two percent of Americans think Obama deserves the most credit for the U.S. special forces' assault on Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, while 13 percent gave credit to former President George W. Bush

Obama had previously suffered criticism that he is not strong enough on national security.

A third of Americans say they are more in favor of holding suspected terrorists without trial at Guantanamo military prison in Cuba since the Bin Laden killing. The poll was conducted on Monday with a 1,010 adults in the United States interviewed online.

2. Now what we need is full closure
The FBI should release the evidence detailing Bin Laden's involvement in the 9/11 plot.

Lets put this to rest once and for all.

5. shrub was in the 90% range for a long time after 9/11. obama only gets 56% for this
proof positive that virtually all democrats have an open mind and will "support the president" based on news and events, whereas at least a solid 30% or so of the country will refuse to support a democratic president no matter what.

they can't even give a democratic president ONE DAY of approval north of a measly 60%, nevermind 90%.

6. You read my mind
That asshole received a 90% approval for doing nothing basically. The President actually helps in taking the guy out and only gets a 56% approval rating. We're see what happens later, but I won't hold my breathe that republicans will give him credit.

7. Be patient
It's just the start. His speech on Thursday will be a boon.

This isn't about ratings though, it's about what's good for our Country. Of course I am Liberal and mostly pro Obama, so having a stronger President Obama right now means that he'll be in a better position to stand up to Republicans who want to take us back to the Gilded age. Obama being more popular means he can be stronger in defending Liberal positions and that's the best thing to come out of all of this Politically IMO.
