New Poll: Obama Could Win Georgia In 2012

According to this new PPP poll; Georgia could be the state that Obama has the best chance of flipping from the loss column (in 2008) into the win column (in 2012.)

Obama’s overall approval numbers in the state are decent (47% approval/48% disapproval) right about in line with his national numbers. Whether he beats the Republican in a prospective general election depends on who wins the GOP nomination:

Obama 48% Sarah Palin 43%
Obama 44% Herman Cain 39%
Obama 46% Newt Gingrich 45%
Obama 45% Mike Huckabee 48%
Obama 43% Mitt Romney 46%

In 2008 Obama lost the state by 5% points to John McCain

Edit: This was an April poll with the latest GOP FUCKUPS our chances are probably better. I will be on the ground doing my part to turn Georgia Blue.

Look at the GOP today much worse off... I read somewhere several weeks ago that the Obama team may consider GA. The POTUS has withstood the odds before and came out the winner.

19. Clinton won in a lot of places in 1992 because it was a 3 way race.

Bill Clinton only had 43% of the vote in 1992. There is no way a Democrat can win places like Georgia, Montana, Kentucky etc. with only 43% of the vote Nationally, unless there is a dominate 3rd party candidate. Ross Perot was a big help to Clinton in a lot of key states.


I'm still hoping for a Tea Party 3rd challenger to help us in 2012.

discussion on NPR, a few weeks ago, and it is definitely not out of the realm of possibility. With the downturn in the economy hitting the urban areas in the Northeast, there are lots & lots of transplants from traditionally blue areas of the country, here in the South.

To be quite honest, I was surprised the president won VA as well. What with Repubs literally trying to kill Medicare, I think we're gonna be in for lots of surprises. :hi:

If he just abandons the state, his message won't get heard and his numbers will drift downward in Georgia.

That state is chock full of birthers, and who knows what all the pastors are telling the people there on Sundays.

But if he's willing to make a try of it, and spend money in Georgia, and do campaign visits, he could make Republicans have to earn it.

8. It will be hard to get enough white votes in Georgia to win

I'm not saying it can't be done, but the reason he's polling in the solid mid-upper 40's is due to African Americans. North Carolina has always been the same way until 2008 when we finally got enough white voters to flip it. It could happen with Georgia this time, but it won't be easy.

14. I totally agree! I have lived here in Ga. my entire life...

except while I was in the military & this state has become so RED there is little to no chance he wins Georgia. I would love to be wrong but I know once you get away from Atlanta it is REDNECK TEA BAGGER Country! Plus, the Christian churches down here literally tell their drones who to vote for & some are even doing it out in the open just daring the Federal Government to stop them!

Not to mention every AM channel is dominated by the big names in Right Wing Propaganda & even many FM channels are now spewing Right Wing brain dead crap in the morning. The stupidity that flows over the Georgia radio air waves would be a great source for comedy if it were not for the fact it influences so many!

However, I WOULD LOVE TO BE WRONG!

15. There is a lot of military and retired military in Georgia...

That was an advantage to John McCain in the last election. Since the capture of Bin Laden and no military person running on the Republican ticket this time around, I could see Democrats improving over the last election.

But Georgia has been moving further to the Right since the late 90's...And after Georgia did what they did to Max Cleland it has never looked back! The entire Legislature is controlled by Republicans & besides Atlanta & maybe Athens & a little around Macon the rest of the State is hard Right I almost sure of. Right Wing Talk radio dominates all the AM channels & the channels it does not are Christian channels that hate the Democrats as well. Many of the FM channels have Right Wing morning shows & almost every business I go into has FOX "News" on. I literally hate my home state! I was stationed in California for 3 years & I wish I had remained there except for the fact I would have never met my wife...Now I am stuck here for a long time, dammit! LOL!

22. I'm sorry, but GA will not go to Obama in 2012. I doubt NC or VA will either.

Nothing personal, no emotion involved, just political reality.

The GOP has a stable of idiots, one of which will be defeated next November. Obama will win a second term. Still, Obama is not crazy popular either. The 2008 wave won't be repeated. Don't count on NC, VA, or GA. I wish it would, but it won't happen.

Not going to happen, in a 2012 environment. States like North Carolina and Virginia don't require the same hurdle. Virginia will probably vote 1-3 points more red than the nation as a whole; North Carolina perhaps 5-6.

I've been here since 2002. Literally every cycle there's undeserved optimism toward Georgia. Too many self-described conservatives in that state.

As someone else posted, if you listen to AM radio in the southern states it's a jolt of reality toward our hurdle. I drive cross country twice every year. You can tell where we have a shot, and where it's hopeless.

The northern part of the state is very blue, Kerry got 45% in the state in 2004 without really trying...I think Obama and Kaine can definitely both win in 2012....
