Murray and Boxer about the Nelson compromise
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 11:07 AM by Mass
I am still wary, but i tend to trust them more than a bench of men on this issue. Somebody should explain in layman terms what this amendment does, because I read the bill and still cannot figure it out.

http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/health-care/nelsons-a-yes-reform-edges-closer-to-reality/

Update: Senators Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray bless Nelson’s compromise in a joint statement:

“We said all along that we wanted to ensure there was a firewall between private and public funds — this compromise achieves that.

“We said we would not accept language that prohibited a woman from using her own private funds for her legal reproductive health care — this compromise meets that test.

“And we said we would stop Stupak — which we did. Let’s be clear — we were both much happier with the Capps language and the language in the underlying bill.

“But compromise was necessary to get a health care bill for the American people, and this compromise achieves that.”

1. Just another step in the war on women's healthcare.
Not a compromise.

2. compromise is never the best solution
it means both sides lose...and this is not a compromise, this is a capitulation, but there is no "win" there.

8. That's exactly right.
Government needs to get out of people's private lives.

The religious freaks should not be able to determine what others can and cannot do. They would not want others beliefs forced upon them, yet they feel it's within their rights to impose their beliefs on others.

Meantime, Sens. Boxer and Murray are trying to help you understand the present reality.

3. They are just towing the party line. I would like to think that they will change this
after the HCR Act becomes law, but I am under no illusion about that either

6. Cool. Release the language.
This is a good game that has been going on for a while.

1) A compromise is announced in general terms

2) Everyone comes out to tell us how great it is

3) Sometime after establishing it's greatness the actual language is exposed to independent analysis

This is what has had Howard Dean going like a yo-yo all these months. Senators describe a compromise to him and he says it's great. Then the details come out and he says it sucks. Then folks say Dean is erratic for always changing his mind.

If the actual language is okay, posing none of the Stupak problems, then I will not bitch about it. But what is the language?

18. Thanks. A state abortion coverage opt-out... didn't see that coming.
I will reserve judgment until some policy analysts go over it in the context of the broader bill.

15. what crap. it enables any state to make it illegal
for any insurance company to sell any coverage for abortions.

It's a fucking firewall all right- between women and health services they need.

16. insurance cos willl now be able to prevent states from creaing their own single payer systems.....
if granted interstate business authority, fed regulations will overrule any state that wants to create a true single payer system, as they now can do if they wish. so if that's the case, our administration has effectively killed that possibility. No cheaper drugs? check. Kill state single payer ability? check. Continue payoffs...ooops contributions...to congress and administration members? check.

well thats one way to play chess I suppose.

John Cole said that some liberal senator should attach a pro-choice amendment to every Nelson-sponsored bill in the future. Make this asshole pay, I say.

24. I don't trust any of them anymore. Too much pressure from Rahm and Co.
To pass this bowel obstruction of a bill.

Pelosi gave us Stupak, don,t forget that.

Every one of them seems to have been bought and paid for at this point.

28. So FORCING Americans to BUY insurance from companies that have KILLED Americans
is somehow ok? In any world, in any reality, the MANDATE is NOT OK. I don't give a flying phuck what these two say about the abortion amendments. It's just another example of "hey, look over there!!" and abortion is, again, the hot potato that gets the attention.

Meanwhile, every American is being force to spend their own money to support the insurance industry.

Do the people inside the beltway actually have ANY CLUE how much most Americans HATE HATE HATE the insurance industry?

No. They haven't a clue.
