So the question this election season is "Would you prefer to re-elect Obama?"
Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 01:12 AM by Cronus Protagonist
“Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for the real Republican all the time.” --- Harry Truman’s advice to Bourbon Democrats, what we call Bluedogs today, and what would be excellent advice to President Obama.

2. No, that's not the question.
The question is "would you prefer to vote to save yourself,
or do you choose to cut your face and nose off instead?"

From the sound of it, doesn't look like you really give a fuck about those folks that have been made to suffer so badly due to that big bad Obama guy! Cause it sounds like you don't mind if they not only suffer, but lose every fucking thing and then some!

Unless you're a Republican or a Naderite, you need to read this: http://www.democratsforprogress.com/2011/09/03/we-all-have-a-choice-in-the-2012-election/

That's the real choice. A Democrat who treats you like dirt or a mutilated face.

Either way. If your a progressive, your screwed until 2016.

4. From your Link.
"I believe, however, for those progressives willing to be intellectually honest, and who understand the concrete reality of political consequences (see Election 2010), we must also be willing to ask ourselves hard questions before the election, as opposed to after the fact."

Nope. No condescending, arrogant sacks of shit here.

7. I'm certain that everyone at DU will pull the lever for Obama.
Where we differ is why. Some will vote for Obama because they are enamoured by him. I know of no one who is giddy about his policies because you never know what they will end up after the compromises, cave-ins and course changes. He could poop in their mouths and they'd eat it up. Soon after they swallowed they'd chastise others for not getting a spoon and digging in while at the same time trying to convince anyone who grimaces that they are bad people.

Others will have to pull the lever because, although we know we are going down the wrong road, at least we are going slower with Obama. If we can get a Progressive in the Whitehouse in 2016, maybe we can turn it around.

You don't seem to understand that Progressives are adamant about wanting progressive policies, not because we are tired of being the target of vitriol from the right and the Whitehouse, or because we want to gloat over politial victories, but because we love the country and believe that our policies will benefit all Americans and cause us to be a stronger country economically, socially and morally.

This is not a pipe dream. Progressivism for the good of the country is pragmatic. progressives are not asking the presdient to do us a favor or throw us some crumbs. We are asking him to do the right thing becasue it is the right thing.

We'll vote for Obama (or I will anyway), but its hard to call it support when I know that the support is not returned.

8. Hell, yes!
When he got elected, I hoped he was as smart and competent as he appeared to be. Then he got to work and I realized he was showing away the whole time. He is much smarter and more competent than he appeared to be. He is much smarter and more competent than almost anyone, I now suspect.

He's not a liberal like I am, that is clear to me. But he's not a criminal either, and his ability to get things done in the face of seditious opposition is frankly like nothing I have ever seen or learned about in American history. He seems to be honest, straightforward, ethical, and inclined to follow the law even though he has enough power to mock it if he wishes.

What I didn't expect when he got elected is that practically nobody is familiar enough with the legislative process to understand how brilliant this President really is. So few of you understand how hard it was to get what little has been done accomplished. I think it has something to do with the fact that the media doesn't understand either, and is simply passing along right-wing press releases that deliberately muddle everyone's understanding.

But I think you're about to see him spell part of it out for you tonight. Some of you are going to figure out what he's done, which is to use the evil powers of the Presidency for good.

Some of you will fail to see it, and continue to dismiss it as multi-dimensional chess, which is a shame because you're the primary beneficiaries of the President's plans, but too poisoned by bad information to realize it.

It seems to me that a Democratic president wouldn't be so insistent on including SS "reform" during budget negotiations, particularly when SS does not contribute to the deficit.

26. Really.
This makes my point about congress being repubs. Including Social Security reform was/is nothing more than a bargaining tool intended to present evidence of Obama’s willingness to compromise yet showing how the repubs refuse to raise taxes.

that is so friggin' stupid I can hardly wrap my mind around it.

What Republican would have repealed DADT, signed any health care bill whatsoever, made any deal to extend unemployment benefits, and the endless list so many detractors hate to read?

Institutionalized corporate insurance, put medicare, medicaid and SS on the table and devastated the poor, the elderly, the sick, the middle class for nothing in return?

It works both ways.

That "few extra months" that you seem to be so dismissive of, kept body & soul together for a lot of people. Nice to see you're so concerned about their long term needs, but perhaps they should've given up eating & feeding their children for those "few extra months"?

Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 11:54 AM by FrenchieCat
is a Democrat that cares more about the middle class and the unemployed than you will ever care yourself. In fact, the devastation you speak of is exactly what some families without unemployment compensation would have been faced with....but I guess they don't count, as long as we can put folks in there place.

In addition, SS and Medicaid weren't on any table for benefit cuts, and notice that nothing has happened to either programs, and you continuing to say so doesn't make it so. It's an empty accusation used by those who pretend to know about government, but only know what they read at DU.

1/ What Republican would repeal DADT? Talk to me when it is repealed, and in any case, that call for an inquiry (that Obama signed) had bipartisan support and DADT was struck down in the courts, so the question is moot.
2/ What Republican would have signed the Healthcare bill as-is? Romney (it's his own plan, a Republican plan, after all)
3/ What Republican would have signed a deal to extend unemployment benefits? All of them, if it means getting re-elected, and most of them if it is coupled with a tax cut for the super wealthy.

Surely you can't be that blind?

36. Republicans have no unemployed constituents you know.
Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 04:02 PM by Autumn
:sarcasm:

Here's how the scenario would have played out:
Obama stands firm. No extension of the tax cuts for the wealthy.

Republicans kill the unemployment extension, Leave Washington, go home tell their unemployed constituents:

Republican politician : Hey I fucked Obama over for you, I killed the UE extension he wanted!! High Five

Unemployed republican constituent: YAY!!! We sure fucked him over. Goes home, sits down with his family, no money no food, warm with the glow of beating Obama on the UE extension.

No fucking way in hell the republicans would have killed the UE extension bill.
Anyone who says different is pissing in your ear and telling you it's rain.

22. Harry Truman isn't thought of as having been a great President. So I don't know...
if I'd take his advice. OTOH, he did win the election.

Of course, this is a moot question, since this doesn't apply to Obama. Or are you speaking of some possible challenger?

much worse would we be off with Huntsman? Which tells me that many on DU who claim to object to Obama's policies and lack of progressive achievements, really don't feel that way at all--that's just the cover. They don't like Obama, would rather have a Republican if it means Obama isn't in office.

34. Hahahaha!
Your extrapolation is in error. Obama is a "successful Republicanvpresident" and I compared him to Clinton, another "successful Republican president" (note the quotes which you ignore, but they mean something, ie that I'm not serious.)

And whether or not we would be better off with Huntsman is a valid question. Perhaps he would inject some sanity into the Republican party. Perhaps not. Perhaps he would split the party and we could push through a progressive agenda. Again, it's a valid question and is not a call to vote for him.

And as for "they" to whom you refer, I'm not one of "them". Just so you know.

BTW. He only ran after the Bushes called him up and convinced him. That says a lot. But even more important, he's viewed as too sane and moderate, by the Republicans. That's how far gone they are.
