Businesses complain about regulations. What are those regulations?
Are those complaints legitimate and if so how?

How much does it cost for a business to comply with specific regulations. Not how much for all but A business.

3. Here's one
My brother is a contractor for one of the big box home stores. His specialty is door replacement - generally exterior entrance doors. He comes in, strips the molding, removes the panel door, removes the frame and installs a new door. Minimal work inside the house - he's replaced my front entry door and I watched what he did. Cleanup and leave.

But, he now has to test homes for lead paint. The cost of federally required training was his responsibility. It takes extra time out of his day, and if he finds lead, he may have to abandon the project and his income. How much does this cost? I've no idea, except he's complained about the regulation and that it has reduced his income.

I'll bet that more lead is ingested by children chewing on cheap Chinese toys.

5. Lead is a real health problem, permanent brain damage, esp. to young children.
Just because we can't see it and didn't know much about it years ago, doesn't make it less true.

8. For twelve bucks, you can buy your own lead test kit
they market them for testing the paint used on toys and things for worried parents. I don't know the different processes, but testing for lead is simple and cheap. If you find it, that's where problems begin (and with good reason), but the test is easy.

9. My thoughts are that regulations are put in place
for a reason... however at times one size does not fit all and they can be cumbersome. However, that is a call for reform - not abandonment of regulation. I do believe some regulations complaints are legitimate.. but I think they should be addressed on a case by case basis and not made a scapegoat for antipathy against any and all regulation.

A few thoughts - building codes... I have been told by a builder of commercial structures that they have to build their buildings to withstand hurricanes even tho they are in Ohio.. b/c that is what federal guidelines say.. I don't know how true that is.. but I can see a legitimate complaint if it is true. Also - workers compensation - In a 2 person, extremely low risk office, we were lumped into rates that were on the level of firefighters and police officers. It was ridiculous... I'm 99% certain, we would never have a workers comp claim from our office.

At my son's daycare - they're not allowed to apply sunblock... really??? So.. I had to lather the kid up every morning - not knowing if they would be outside or not.. and I personally don't like putting sunblock on a kid unless it is necessary. There are ingredients in sunblocks that can possibly have long-term side effects.

My mom is a small business owner and struggles at times with her own bills. We both favor minimum wage... but there is this young girl that we mentor. My mom lets her work a couple hours a week - mostly for life lessons... the girl is sweet but not at all employee level. She mostly makes the shelves pretty or stocks some items. I'm sure if mom could just slip her a few dollars here and there, rather than treat her as an employee with reporting, minimum wage and taxes, she would give her more hours.. It is an escape for the girl from a dysfunctional home and a chance to be around more responsible people.

So, IMO - there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rules... however I do believe the rules for the most part were put in place for a reason... that doesn't mean that they can't be changed - and some of them probably do need to be changed a bit. It is an evolution and if we take a yes/no stand.. we'll never find the right answers.
