Bachmann claims HPV vaccine might cause ‘mental retardation’
Bachmann claims HPV vaccine might cause ‘mental retardation’
By Rachel Weiner, Tuesday, September 13, 11:02 AM

After piling on Texas Gov. Rick Perry in last night’s presidential debate, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is continuing to attack the 2012 frontrunner for mandating that young girls get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Win McNamee GETTY IMAGES Bachmann found her line of attack in teh Tampa debate.

Perry has apologized for the mandate, saying it was a mistake. One of his former top aides had gone on to become a lobbyist for vaccine-maker Merck & Co. and pushed the governor for an executive order.

Post-debate, the Minnesota congresswoman sent out a fundraising appeal on the issue with the title “I’m Offended.” In interviews after the debate, she suggested that the vaccine could do permanent damage.

“There’s a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine,” Bachmann said on Fox News. “She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result. There are very dangerous consequences.”

6. oh wow...I thought Bachmann is a prime example of the stupid that occurs when NOT getting the HPV
...oof course neither of those possibilities have a study that confirms these findings.

9. Excluding the specifics here...but hasn't it been proven that some vaccines
have affected children negatively. Like deafness, some mental problems, autism and the like? Onto the specifics---isn't the HPV given specifically to women to make sure they don't get the HPV virus? What does that have to do with children?

10. No. Vaccines do not cause autism. It was a fraud, perpetrated for money.

11. Pretty well debunked by Martin Bashir this afternoon...
on MSNBC. He called on her to put up or shut up, basically - which we know she will not do since this was about nothing more than hearing herself talk.

On another note, I haven't heard much reaction to her comment last night about how the vaccine mandate (paraphrasing) "took away young women's choice" in their healthcare options. Uhhhh - yeah, I agree. How about ensuring that that choice in healthcare options is extended to every woman - and every man - with regard to their reproductive health. Some of the wacko laws being proposed lately could even outlaw birth control, never mind abortion, if they are interpreted in the extreme. And we know that's what the nuts want.

15. This vaccine doesn't have scientifically backed
connection to any of the side effects being discussed, only anecdotal evidence. Having said that, research shows the vaccine isn't necessarily effective either. This was a giveaway to Merc. So a reason to dislike both Michelle for her crazy, unfounded, "science" and Perry for his crony capitalism.

17. No, it's not. It's been studied ad nauseum, and is continuing to be studied.
It is safe, and it is effective.
