Obama Willing To Sign Parts Of Job Bill, Push For Rest (Just In from Sam Stein)
Obama Would Sign Parts Of Jobs Bill, Push For Rest

Sam Stein

WASHINGTON -- The Obama White House is revising its initial unwillingness to negotiate on the president's job creation plan, saying now that if individual components of the bill came to the president's desk -- as opposed to the bill in its entirety -- he would sign them into law.

The new approach opens up the administration to charges that it no longer views the American Jobs Act as a take-it-or-leave-it bill. But in a briefing with reporters Tuesday, senior administration officials insisted President Obama wasn't backing off his position that he wants the entire bill passed through Congress.

If lawmakers sent Obama legislation that would, say, send money to the states to rehire teachers, he would sign it and push for Congress to pass the remainder of his suggested reforms. As one of those senior administration officials put it, it would be politically suicidal to veto a bill that creates 1 million jobs just because it doesn't create 2 million jobs.

The less-than-absolutist stance contrasts with remarks made in television appearances earlier Tuesday morning by Obama adviser David Axelrod, who insisted that the president wasn't interested in negotiations "to break up the package."

1. It seems to me
like it won't work if it's done piecemeal. It'll just be more cuts, cuts, cuts and no revenue generation.

6. Because he can't get the fucking thing through the House, that's why.

You got a better idea for how to deal with these Teabaggers?

And not that shit about telling the American people; the president is in Boehner's district today doing just that. Forget the fucking speeches. Come up with solutions.

Until then, stop blaming the president and blame the REPUBLICANS!!!!!

11. Blame the republicans? What a concept!
It's all too convenient to blame Barack Obama, calling him every name in the book, instead of laying blame where it truly belongs: at the feet of obstructionist pukes in the House of Representatives. The incessant clutching of pearls whenever the man tries to circumvent or thwart the fucking repugs has long since become tiresome. Some people need another hobby!

16. It's not worth getting it through if it isn't in one package.
The President then needs to remind the public that it is the fault of the Republicans over and over.

17. And that's exactly what he's doing, but the ODSers will always blame him FIRST
and not the Republicans!!

19. Why so quickly...
At least tell the American people that we need the program in its entirety, if that is what you want, and let the people know that the Republicans want to dilute the package by sending it up piecemeal. There just is no fight there.

...editorializing disguised as anonymous claims.

The President is speaking out in public, pushing the entire bill. Axelrod made that clear.

7. unrealistic without control of the House
which is what we'll be lectured after the compromises happen.

It will follow the same old pattern: insist Obama is taking a harder line than he really is, then castigate people who were foolish enough to believe he would take a hard line.

10. Hmmm?
"unrealistic without control of the House"

So it's unrealistic to push for the whole plan, but it's realistic to be upset by a speculative report that the administration will not reject parts of the plan and keep fighting for the rest?

The President is in Ohio today.

He delivered his proposal to Congress yesterday: Obama formally delivers jobs bill, urges Congress to pass it right away

He was in Cantor's district a few days ago: Obama rallies crowd to his jobs plan _ in Rep. Cantor's hometown

Speculative reports that undercut the President's actual words are bullshit!

people should be realistic before and after the compromises happen.

14. So
"no, I don't think people should be upset by this report... people should be realistic before and after the compromises happen."

...compromise is "realistic"?

As one of the "people," is being "realistic" good or bad?

Realistically speaking, do you believe there should be compromise to pass this bill?

This isn't a fucking football game; people's livelihoods are on the line. To those who insist on making this a fucking game: passage of even PART of this act represents a loss for the repugs. Sis boom bah!

21. What's sad is that I think that MANY did "expect" Something Else...
And, we could differ on expectations and "Rainbows, Ponies, Stardust"....but, it remains that many Americans did NOT VOTE FOR...MORE DECEPTION...and Chaos and Obfuscation ...like we are getting from our Leaders.

And, the money that was given by "small folks" is being overwhelmed by the BIG FOLKS...and this isn't what people came out in droves in Red States and Blue States to vote for a candidate who had a "funny name" (that seemed very Islamic after "9/11") ...but who promised the force of the Reverend Martin and the hopes and dreams of so many Americans who thought they'd finally gotten someone "Of the People."

There are DU'ers who come back and say: "But, you had to know that he was a "Centrist" if anyone really listened to his speeches and knew his Background. They say: "He was always true to what he was ...but "You People" put hopes and dreams and expectations on him that he could NEVER Achieve! "These People" tell us to wait. He's a "Master Chess and Poker Player and a Trasitional who will remake the Political USA Landscape." "These People" tell us that we must be patient...because "He KNOWS."

I really don't see any of that coming true...now or ever. Only folks so disillusioned with him that they don't know what the hell to do going forward.

That's what I see around my neighborhood.

18. Opposed to saying...
I won't sign it because I want to create 2 million jobs not 1 million jobs. Of course he would sign it to create a million jobs. But that still doesn't mean he is negotiating this.

23. In other words, Obama will capitulate to tax breaks and give up on spending.
Well, maybe capitulate is not the right word. After-all, he did put the tax breaks on the table. He'll just capitulate on pushing for the spending.

24. Let me guess:
*MORE Free Trade
*The Corporate Tax Cuts
*The de-funding and marginalization of Social Security through the Payroll Tax "Holiday"

....will ALL be signed.

...but Jobs Spending?

"We'll fix it later."

"We need to do something today."

"Can't let the Perfect be the enemy of the Good."

"This is a step in the right direction."

"So you oppose reform?"

"You don't understand Chess."

"This is the most progressive legislation in decades."

"This is a HUGE WIN."

"AW, you didn't get your pony."

"The President is smarter than you."

Blue Links

"Blame the Republicans, not the Democrats."

"But this is "historic".

Yadda...Yadda...Yadda

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

Solidarity!
The problem with "Centrists" is that they agree with Republicans on Policy.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-11 08:14 PM by vroomvroom
Hand the republicans everything before you begin negotiating. Please tell me why someone is willing to accept less before something starts. Now why would republicans even bother to allow through any progressive ideas?

We've seen this game played out before.
