Barack Obama 'will veto' Palestinian UN bid

Barack Obama 'will veto' Palestinian UN bid
21 September 2011 Last updated at 21:48 ET

Barack Obama has told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas he will veto his bid for UN membership, as he tried to persuade him to drop the plans.

But Mahmoud Abbas vowed to press ahead during a meeting with the US president, the White House said afterwards.

Mr Obama had told the UN General Assembly a Palestinian state could only be achieved through talks with Israel.

But French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned a veto could spark another cycle of violence in the region.

So how exactly does this work? We keep telling the world that we want two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side but then we then go and veto their UN bid for a Palestinian state?

Every year we give billions of dollars in aid and weapons to Israel which they use to kill Palestinians. We protect Israel at the UN and deny the right of the Palestinians to have a state. Then we go and launch missiles and bombs at numerous Muslim countries, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians, falsely thinking we can rid the world of "terrorism" using those barbaric tactics. After all that, we wonder why people in the Muslim world hate us. "They hate us for our freedom," we say.

US foreign policy is like a never-ending nightmare. It's under the complete control of the Military Industrial Complex and other nefarious interests.

1. Re: "how exactly does this work?"
There's a couple basic answers:
* first of all, the US gov't's primary export is bullshit; there's a lot of talk, a lot of talk after that, and more talk just in case you weren't paying attention before.. not much of it should really be taken seriously, this subject especially included.
* secondly, it's about control. We "say" (see bullet point #1) that, but it's meant to be on US/Israeli terms--going directly to the UN, bypassing phony negotiations, theoretically takes the power away from the occupier and it's big brother. big brother likes control, so this is a problem.

I'm not sure why Sarkozy (one of the butchers of Tripoli) is concerned, or rather appearing to be concerned -- I believe he already has indicated that France intends to vote against it..

2. Going to the UN is seen as an affront to U.S. The Palestinians
knew it would isolate Israel and force the U.S. to
be isolated. They knew we are committed to supporting
Israel in such a situation.

I appreciate the Palestinians plight, but even if they
pursue their course at the UN, nothing changes until
Israel and Palestine sit down and negotiate a Peace.

Even if the UN approved or whatever, nothing changes
until they negotiate. Some may say they are successful
in trying to embarass the US and Israel.

3. Will it ever be in Israel's interest to negotiate?
It is near impossible to have a successful outcome when one negotiator holds so much power
and the other holds next to none. Israel will never give up control of the West Bank. They
never intend to. They continue to build more settlements each year. So where exactly would
this Palestinian state be?

The future holds no peace or no State of Palestine. That is the future Israel wants. And who will
stop them from getting it?

13. PLUS... And This Is PURELY Political, I Do Believe There Are Many
more Jewish people who vote here in America! Unfortunately, I feel this factors into the whole equation. Given that until VERY, VERY recently this administration was rather willing to shun and/or look less favorably at his very own Democratic base, they probably feel that losing a lot of Jewish votes would be almost suicidal!

But then, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is head honcho of the Party now, so she SHOULD get her job done. She IS Jewish and one of the reasons I feel she was supported as much as she was. Rahm (the rat) Emmanuel was also Jewish who I always felt didn't care much for certain types of Democrats. But always moved the Jewish vote front and center.

He has been ONE Democrat that I haven't trusted much, even before he became Obama's COS! A man of enormous ego and one who has always seemed to be looking out for No. 1. Was he affective as Majority leader? I suppose he was, but never felt "some" Democrats were worth much more than lip service. I was never a big fan of his even before he became the Majority leader in the house, but when he came out after 2008 and TOOK credit for Howard Dean's 50-state strategy I was even more upset.

Dean had used this strategy when he was running for President and it had been HIS idea to begin with, but Rahmbo used it and made it appear that it was HIS idea. I was very glad when he went back to Chicago, but not so happy about his election. However, one can't say he doesn't have CHUTZPAH/HUTZPA, however it is that you spell it... I'm not Jewish but I think I've seen it spelled either way! I believe it's was Bachmann who pronounced it incorrectly a while back or not. Given the spelling as CHUTZPAH, I "think" it's still pronounced with the H.

Sorry, got carried away with all this.

4. He has to.
It would be a political disaster for him to back the Palestinians, probably political suicide. Now he can easily tamp down those "betrayer of Israel" lines. Particularly when their leader is pinning badges of honor on him.

15. It's the reality of the situation.
He has to take this stance or he almost certainly loses the election. Big picture.

18. Even if all the good one wanted to do by gaining office is sacrificed, I find that self defeating
becoming the enemy to fight the enemy leaves the same enemy with different cloths.

7. Well
"So how exactly does this work?"

...maybe he's trying to allay the concerns of NY 9 voters. Remember how some were up in arms about him losing those voters?

Here's a good commentary on the subject.

8. Once again the right wing president from Frace is more progressive
than the left in the USA. I remember Sarkozy talking at the G 20 about how financial paridises like monaco and switzerland were horrible and how everyone should be taxed and that it was disgraceful to hide ones money in such a country. he wanted to take action against countries like switzerland such as sanctions or other economic pressure and mocked the "list" that the other leaders wanted. had sarkozy followed the french tradition of occupying foreign policy while leaving domestic policy to the prime minister he would win in a landslide next year, he pleases both the right and left by defending the palestineans, as he did for helping the popular revolt in Lybia, as president of the European Union he worked to position the Euro as the worlds currency in opposition to the dollar, something the left and the right both like, what french people do not like is that he pushed for lower taxes on the rich and then told us to tighten our belts, we dont like seeing the rich get more and then be told to eat cake so he is fucked next year for the election but once again i give him hats off on foreign policy. i actually would love to go out bicycling with mr. Sarkozy after he retires just to talk politics with him, he is right wing but farther to the left than any president i have evern had in the usa starting with carter. he does not want to do away with our national health care, is pro gay rights, anti death penalty, pro choice.... the goalposts are so much father to the left here in france.....

our RIGHT WING stands up for the palesineans forced to live in the ghettos of the west bank, gaza, and the golan heights whereas the LEFT WING AND RIGHT WING in the USA stand up for helping Likud Party (read apartheid) run Israel discriminate against people for their religion.

So he's more progressive because he appeases both the right and left? Which group was he appealing to with his Sharia law?

14. sharia law?
you mean the law that says you cannot hide your face in public? or the stupid headscarf law that says teachers and students cannot wear headscarves that only hide their hair? The hiding the hair law is from before he was president.

Sarkozy is more progressive than obama by appeasing the left and the right even though he does more to appease the right because our political goalposts are so much farther to the left in france than they are in the usa. our solid right wingers in france would be to the left of most democrats in the usa.
