Romney has been proving in the debates that he won't be a push-over
I've been hoping that Perry would be their nominee because I think he would be much easier to beat, and so far from the debates that has been the case. Romney has been keeping Perry on the defensive and Perry has hardly gotten any hits in. First Romney has been hitting Perry on social security "ponzi scheme' quite successfully and now on the illegal immigration school bill.

Mittens will do anything to win--his vulnerable point is that he changes his stands on the drop of a hat if it will help him, but so far Perry hasn't been able to get that across. In the meanwhile Romney is chipping at Perry's lead.

Meanwhile polls are showing that Romney would be the GOP candidate best equippted to beat President Obama. For instance in Florida Obama beats Perry by two-points in the latest poll, but Romney beats Obama by seven.

3. No, we all don't know that
if Trump were to run it would be as an independent which I wish he would do because he would divide the anti-Obama vote.

2. True
Perry is arrogand and dumb, Romney is just arrogant. Also, and I hate saying this, I'd rather have Romney as their candidate, just in case, God forbid, Obama loses. He is significantly less scary.

4. Awesome.
So, in order to stick it to their ever-hated Democrats, the American people will vote for, as the guy to cure an economy ruined by predatory Wall Street capitalist scumbags . . . a $250 million dollars-rich predatory Wall Street capitalist scumbag. And see no problem whatsoever with that.

Amazing. Absolutely and truly amazing.

I'm stunned with two "n"s.

5. Don't get it
Have people been listening to this guy?

He is every bit as dangerous and as right-wing as Perry. He's hardly more "acceptable" or the "lesser of two evils" or whatever adage you want to throw out there, than Perry or any of these other rubes.

And, remember. Even if you want to call Romney the establishment candidate...guys, the establishment runs the Tea Party. It's not the other way around. He has already shown he has no consistency or value system whatsoever, and will be as right-wing as he is told to be.

Make no mistake, if God forbid this so-called businessman douchebag became president, it would be beyond disastrous for this country.

11. Beware
If (more like when) Romney gets the nomination, I hope all of us dems/libs/progressives still get out there and be active as we would have if it were Perry.

Because we are extremely fucked if that sleazeball becomes president.

Fortunately, I think Obama will unleash absolute hell on either of them. I'm wondering if even the right-wing pseudo-intelligentsia is still underestimating what a force Obama can be.

Plus, the fact that he kind of...you know...BELIEVES in what he's saying somewhat helps.

6. Romney has ZERO charisma.
Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 10:31 AM by Vicar In A Tutu
Don't let his performance in an historically weak field fool you. This is the same Mitt Romney who couldn't get close to a past-prime, punch drunk John McCain. There hasn't been a machine like this Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed the Terminator.

If you look at any election over the last 50 years, the more charismatic candidate has won - even when it's a smaller difference between two relative stiffs ala Bush - Dukakis, or Nixon's victories, the less stilted candidate manages to do the business. There's a huge, huge void in that area between Obama and Romney; when it comes to selling their vision for the country it's going to look like Coca-Cola vs Generic Brand.

it's pretty much universally conceded that Romney had way more charisma than Tricky Dick. Or were you referring only to the General Election?

Ironic, eh, given that George Romney is the Mittster's father? The father's chances ended when he claimed he had been "brainwashed" about Vietnam.

24. General.
There are too many mitigating factors in Primaries. In the general, however, you have two candidates under the spotlight of the colossus. You've gone mainstream, you're on TV every other minute of every single hour of every passing day. Stiff, wooden candidates don't have a great record of connecting strongly enough to convince the public that they should assume the role of President, and Mr. Romney - ever the automaton - makes John Kerry look positively spry.

7. How do you know this???
"...Romney has been hitting Perry on social security "ponzi scheme' quite successfully"

How do you know he was "successful"? Most Christian/Tea Baggers could care less what Romney has to say & last time I checked the Christian/Tea Bagger faction controls the GOP, correct?

Just curious to know if you are aware of polls or other sources that shows Romney gaining ground on Perry?

Thanks!!

9. The media is down talking Perry hard! They've got their orders,
and Romney will get the nom...unless there's someone else that will surprise us,
but Perry is being put out. It's obvious that this is the case, when the mainstream
corporate media starts to all say the same exact things about Perry......all of the sudden,
and that's what they are doing now, so he might as well bow out. He's done.

27. It is like Perry is a democrat ...
the way the media is piling on him ...

I noticed that last week with Morning Jerk. That thing he/they do, where they tip toe around while they try to figure out just the right way to spin some negative thing on a democrat - they were doing that with Perry.

Absolutely, their collective little mealy mouthed selves don't want Perry.

10. I look at this two ways:
1. Obama would have a much easier time defeating Perry. I hope Perry becomes the nominee, since it will be almost assured Obama will win. But, should he lose, this country is utterly fucked.

2. Obama vs. Romney would be a much tougher fight. It could go either way. I'd give the slight edge to Obama, but it will be close. So, I'd rather have Perry, but should Obama lose, Romney is significantly better than Perry. Not that I think a Romney administration would be good for America, but it would be miles ahead of a Perry administration.

12. The Obama campaign needs to go hard at the Romney flip-flopping
The polls don't mean a whole lot because there is no head-to-head campaigning going on. The Obama campaign isn't even in high gear yet.

13. Romney is "gago" when he speaks.
I don't know the translation of Gago in english. I think you know what I mean. He gets stuck in words and talks much too fast then he gets stuck again, and to me, does not have any personality whatsoever.

14. The GOP and Democrats both want Perry to win the nomination.
I agree that Romney could be the tougher candidate to go against. On the other hand, Bush was also arrogant and dumb, and look at how far he got.

And in a debate with Obama, Romney will call himself a 'job creator', and leave himself wide open.

Just because he looks good debating Rick Perry, doesn't mean he actually is good. A monkey would look smart debating Rick Perry.

22. Romney has a tendency to make boneheaded comments.
If he is the nominee I am sure there will be more as he will be forced to face intense scrutiny and questioning. No doubt there will be some duzys for Sat Night Live skits and they will have impact.

25. Of all the lame candidates the Republicans have out there,
Romney is the only one who could be a real contender in a general election. Perry and Bachmann are so far to the right that they would scare the average voter. Newt is a creep, Ron Paul has never garnered enough traction aside from the support of a faithful few, the rest haven't even gotten out of the mound.

Therefore, if the Republicans were smart they would elect Romney as their nominee.

29. Perry is not dropping out ...
It is a two horse race with him and Romney, and he still is the guy I would put the money on.

He has every other candidate and the media piling on him now, not a free ride like at the beginning when he entered late as the calvary. Game on, so be it.

But, he still is the embodiment of the republican party, and once this goes to the primaries, the chaff is going to get weeded out. For the most part, Romney has shown his ceiling. What he was before Perry entered the race officially is probably the best he can do, and the people who are behind the Bachmans, Santorums, they are a lot less likely to throw in with Romney than Perry once the field starts to thin out.
