I have a real problem with this, too. And I even get confused about who I gave what to and when. And when you do give, they just immediately bounce back an email asking you to contribute more. Recently, I decided I would just become a monthly donor to the Obama 2012 campaign, so I would not have to ponder anything. It didn't stop the emails of course.
I usually just delete the DSCC and DCCC emails without reading them. I do donate to them occasionally (never by phone, only on the Internet), but I really resent their taking me for dumb with the red-meat headlines. In fact, I once was asked to participate in a focus group for DCCC in which they tried to see what people would respond to for fundraising pitches. I meekly suggested that what would be most compelling to me would be them telling me what specifically they would use the money for. Boy, did that ever go over like a lead balloon. The winning answers were all the sort of "how bad the Republicans are" red meat.
But guess what? I read today (NYT?) that the Obama campaign is starting a new fundraising tactic where they are going to tell donors exactly what the money will be used for. Hooray for me. I approve. Apparently, it's already controversial. Not catchy enough.
Today I got an email from the DSCC that was actually successful. It was personalized, and they told me when I made my last donation. To my surprise, it was a year ago, for the 2010 midterm elections. I thought I'd given them some between that time. So I gave again. I'm considering a small monthly donation to them and the DCCC so that I don't have to think about it all year.
