Who Is Mitt Romney Conning?
Mitt Romney’s problem with the Republican Party is not just that he previously held liberal positions on a wide-ranging array of issues. That can be explained away, at least a bit, as pandering necessary to win votes in a Democratic state. The deeper problem is that Romney was promising behind closed doors to act as essentially a sleeper agent within the Republican Party, adopting liberal stances, rising to national prominence, and thereby legitimizing them and transforming the Party from within. Today’s Washington Post has more detail:

Mitt Romney was firm and direct with the abortion rights advocates sitting in his office nine years ago, assuring the group that if elected Massachusetts governor, he would protect the state’s abortion laws.

Then, as the meeting drew to a close, the businessman offered an intriguing suggestion — that he would rise to national prominence in the Republican Party as a victor in a liberal state and could use his influence to soften the GOP’s hard-line opposition to abortion.

He would be a “good voice in the party” for their cause, and his moderation on the issue would be “widely written about,” he said, according to detailed notes taken by an officer of the group, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

1. Nobody, yet
The only true support he has is from the country clubbers, and his "experience" at Bain Capital shows the 1% that he truly understands their needs.

However, I suppose most of the tea partiers would vote for him, if it came down to him, Obama, and some third-party religious whackadoodle.

3. Ya Think
The Tea Nuts have a Masada Complex. I think enough of them would vote for the whackadoodle to hand Obama a victory or buttress his margin.

5. Even if 100% of the tea partiers voted for Mittens
The fundies will cause him to lose. They absolutely do NOT want a Mormon President, and would take out their revenge on the rest of the party for nominating him. That's especially since I believe that Romney cannot come to Tampa with a first ballot victory in hand. The snake-handlers will scream to high heaven that it was stolen from them, if Romney gets the nomination.

4. I Rather Face Cain, Gingrich, Or Perry
At least he comes off as sane.

6. While it would indeed be fun to have Cain
as the Repig nominee, we'd have a battle on our hands with Perry. Whatever magic he could pull to come up with the Rethug nomination, he would use in the general election. He's acceptable to the country-clubbers, the fundies, and even the tea party would forgive him for calling them heartless.

7. He doesn't seem sane to me
Edited on Thu Nov-03-11 06:59 PM by Worship Money
He comes off like a fucking freak, who spent his entire life outside of normal society. Looking back I think it's why (well, one reason why) Bush seemed so disturbing and strange as well....grew up and then spent his adult life in a different world.

Also, someone who is this unbelievably phony and gelatinous in political views I think forfeits some of the perception of sanity and normalcy.

Seems like a creepy, weird, repugnant individual to me.

10. Romney is not promising to go to Washington and destroy it. Tea baggers want blood.
Romney is not promising that.
