But I agree that the wording is wrong. The Repubs don't "love America"-they HATE Americans because we voted for Bill Clinton twice and then Barack Obama in 2008. They will do anything to destroy a Democratic president because the reality is not tolerable to them.

I spend a considerable time in border towns in the Southwest which has a well known atmosphere of right wing politics. (But the quieter Hispanic population is much less enthralled with the right, including many involved in law enforcement.)

The hardest hit of these towns was El Centro/Calexico. At the height of the collapse in 2008 I walked through a huge air conditioned mall and even though it was 110 degrees outside the cool air conditioning attracted exactly three customers. I was trying to get some walking in and the mother and daughter were sharing an ice cream cone.

In many respects this was ground zero of the collapse. The records showed 30% unemployment but there just wasn't much hope for anything in the near future. Geothermal and Solar plants were in the future but even if they were economically viable they needed a new electrical line over the mountains to take the power to San Diego.

Restaurants were empty and if you went out at 2 in the morning an entirely different city of drug addicts roamed the neighborhoods, on bycicles. The all night dealer in front of the 7-11 made no effort to hide his activity.

Then the stimulus started to pour millions into El Centro. Suddenly all of the interchanges were getting major needed up grades. El Centro was paving all of its streets.

It was also ground zero for stimulus spending.

And not one sign explained where this 'manna from heaven' was coming from.

Now the restaurants were filling back up and I had to sit at the counter and eventually I got talking to the uninformed red neck who was angry at Obama. But these are not the manufactured jerks like Rush, they just listen to him. Slowly I would point out project after project and we would agree more and more. I knew that I could pull back when they eventually wanted to explain that they 'weren't racists and knew that Obama was a good family man but just didn't want socialism' even though they cheered each project in their community.

Taking the early morning walks in their main park you shared a "beat the heat" comradery with the crowd that showed up at 5 to walk in the 85 degree heat. Then we noticed that a sub contractor started delivering up market paving bricks. Over the next 4 weeks we watched in amazement while a town that didn't have money to change the plastic bags in the litter box (I marked it with my disposed gum and watched while the sun oxidized that gum and left a permanent mark on the bag over a three month period) was getting a brand new brick path that would make Santa Monica proud.

I spotted the red neck owner from Fresno and every morning would wish him good morning and share a few good words. He was running 6 projects around the state and it was obvious that he was doing very well on stimulus projects.

As they approached the last day we got in an extended talk and I said that I liked the people here but "they are so narrow in their thinking that even though they have received tens of millions in stimulous money to fix (insert list of big local projects) they were going to vote against Obama in the next election because he is too nice to Gays". (Impoverished Imperial County spent some of its very limited money on the legal challenge on same sex marriage).

The sun baked red neck (and in this case it was literally red) turned to me and said triumphantly "I don't know about that but I am not going to vote for him because he is a communist".

I have evolved past the strong urge of violence and have taken it as a personal challenge to leave guys like this with something that will really get under his skin.

As I looked at him and I considered the 1% strangling the 99% that are in fact their customers, as I wondered at what point a critical mass will be reached that guys like the Waltons will be begging for higher taxes on the top 10% so that Walmart customers actually have disposable income, as I thought back of the mother daughter sharing that ice cream cone in the empty mall that had atleast 10 thousand customers last Sunday, I calmly looked at him and simply said,

"Well that could be true of course, definitely could be true. But really only two alternatives are possible; Either President Obama has fooled tens of millions of Americans and only a few dozen of you guys have uncovered his Marxist/Lenninist program OR you are a person that is so consumed by hatred that your racism has made you somewhat dellusional. But really it has to be one thing or the other."

I walked away and as I got in my car I wondered at this rather unique historical phenomena that we are watching. Like the pictures of a great nova exploding, or like the inexplicable act of a giant whale repeatedly beaching itself we are watching the benefactors of the greatest economic accumulation machine commit economic suicide by embrassing a final orgasmic embrace of 'Fuck You' economics. They got theirs and who ever didn't get to the party on time was too slow, too stupid or not blessed by a creater with an ironic and capricous attitude.

It wasn't just that this contractor was biting the hand that was feeding him, or actually making him rich.

It wasn't that you had to wonder what hope there was for an economic/political system where even those that get the greatest benefit are willing to throw it away to indulge their twisted hatred of skin color.

It was that this guy thought that he could go to a public park in an area outside of his home base and say completely idiotic things and he thought that no one would call him on it.

Makes you wonder what that big whale who is determined to die of hunger on the beach is thinking about.

Seriously - they're that insane in their racism and hatred that they hold two contradictory thoughts in their head at once: that Obama was born in Africa AND his father was really an American Black Panther (AND his Indonesian step-father had the authority to negate Obama's American citizenship - which they don't believe existed anyway).

These people are mentally ill. This guy basically said he wanted immediately-post-WWII USA back -- and what he didn't say was that it was a world where women, furriners and happy darkies knew their place, and white guys ran the whole show.

The diehard republicans I know weren't celebrating or experiencing a sense of closure that the guy who led the group (Al Qaeda) that attacked us on 9/11 and that signified the opposition in the war we have been in for the last 10 years was dead. They were upset because they thought killing Bin Laden would make Obama look good. Imagine if the republicans in the 1940s were upset that the US won the war against Japan and Germany because it would make a socialist like FDR look good.
