Iowa congressman: Look at Herman Cain’s past – at Whirlpool
As Iowans look at Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain’s past, don’t overlook his role at a company that caused “economic devastation” in Newton, a Democratic Iowa congressman said tonight. U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell in a written a statement noted that
Cain served on Whirlpool’s board of directors from 1992 to 2003 and again from 2005 to April 2011.
Whirlpool acquired Maytag then closed the Newton plant in 2006.
“As we continue to hear more and more about Herman Cain’s past, Iowans should also know about Mr. Cain’s role in overseeing the closure of the Maytag plant in Newton and the export of thousands of jobs to Mexico,” Boswell said.

“Herman Cain is no friend of working Iowans as he personally played a major role in the economic devastation of the central Iowa town. Newton has never been the same since Maytag left. “While Cain continues to make money from Whirlpool, it’s rather apparent that his backwards idea of fixing the economy is putting Americans out of work. “Just last week, Whirlpool announced plans to cut 5,000 workers in the U.S. and Europe, which includes the complete closure of its Fort Smith, Arkansas plant.”http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/2011/11/03/iowa-congressman-says-look-at-herman-cains-past-at-whirlpool/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
