http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67559.htmlShe said, that the US is turning into a banana republic. And she is totally right.
What does the term "banana republic" mean?
Let's look back at the Cold War. The US had a habit of meddling with the governments of Central and South America. Those were countries with huge agricultural possibilities, where a fortune could be made with fruits, sugar, tobacco...
But what if such a country's government happened to get in the way of profits? Let's say because of unions, trading- and workplace-regulations, rule of law...
Easy solution: The company called the CIA and the US military and told them, those guys standing in the way of their profit were actually Commies.
The CIA deposed of the government (not all democracies are created equal) and installed a dictator, the company got its way and everybody was happy (peasants don't count).
And because these countries often exported bananas, those corruption-ridden US-installed dictator-ships were called "banana republics".
Let's recap: Corporations use political connections and illegal means to increase their profits, while at the same time intentionally hurting the rights of the population of said country.
