Ohio Issue 3 Health Care Option Amend.
Edited on Tue Nov-08-11 09:19 PM by nmbluesky
Yes 65%

No 35%

The following is the introduction to the official argument for Issue 3: Read the entire text:
Protect your health care freedom, preserve your right to choose your doctor and health insurance, and keep government out of your personal medical decisions.

The following is the introduction to the official argument against Issue 3. Read the entire text:
Voting “NO” means that health care will be more secure because working families won’t be denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition. Voting “NO” also helps protect Ohioans from the risk of losing their coverage or being forced into bankruptcy when someone gets sick.

I think the wording of the ballot title had a lot to do with it.
What a shame, that people are so easily misled.

9. So true
You had to read it twice, then summary made you do a double take. I wonder how many people went back and changed their vote before casting.

21. absolutely. I voted absentee, and waited a day until I understood it...
I knew when I read it that the verbage would confuse anybody who didn't actually go look it up to see exactly what they were voting for. As intended. I had to go to a Dem endorsement site to read what the hell I was voting on. If you didn't do that, you could easily be fooled. My guess is that is exactly what happened.

8. Yep!
Perhaps they think they are voting "For" some kind of health insurance that will benefit them.

It will end up in court, as I'm not sure that Ohio can exempt itself from Federal laws.

2. Isn't Yes a vote against the Affordable Health Care for America Act?
Or am I misinterpreting things? Isn't this amendment intended to circumvent the mandate in the law?

13. You are misinterpreting....
The language of the bill simply states that Ohioans always are given a choice as to what kind of healthcare they choose to buy. Since the Affordable care act actually expands your "choices" the bill itself really has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act. This issue was placed on the ballot in an effort to counteract the Issue 2 vote. Issue 2 was "Yes" to keep the new Ohio anti-union collective bargaining law. "No" was to repeal it. With nearly 500,000 votes counted Issue is losing 2-1. So Ohio is actually voting WITH the unions and turnout is amazing for an offyear.

14. they didn't know
all the press/efforts/phone calls were about issue 2. Not a lot of people even knew about issue 3 or the fact that a State can't exempt itself from a Federal law and the Republican AG - DeWine said as much.

17. Hey that's an old California trick
Growing up in California that was a trick that you saw a lot where they titled an initiative so it sounded positive toward something but if you voted yes you were actually voting against what you thought the initiative was about (obviously if you read the initiative carefully you would know which way to vote) so a no vote was how you voted if you were really for it. For example, the initiative would be called 'the California Clean Water Act' but the wording of the initiative would mean that if you voted Yes you were for removing all regulations on water pollution and if you voted No you wanted the regulations left in place. As I remember they eventually passed a law or regulation that said you couldn't write the initiatives that way (also I think those in charge of okaying the wording of initiatives were given the power to change or reject specific wording).

... to educate Ohio on what Issue 3 was all about.

I think that's the main problem.

I don't expect it will have any lasting impact.

My wife works where she meets many people from all walks of life. She was amazed at the number of people that had no clue about issue 2, let alone issue 3.

25. Symbolic - this never stands up in court - there is no way they can "opt out" of federal law
by referendum - otherwise, you could still segregate schools, bathrooms and businesses in many states via referendum

This was wingnut flypaper to get people out to vote for Issue 2 while they were there.

We won 9 out of 10 liberal ballot measures, it's ok to lose one big one.
