Hawaiian singer surprises Obama summit with ‘Occupy’ song

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/11/13/hawaiian-singer-surprises-obama-summit-with-occupy-song/

A popular Hawaiian recording artist turned a top-security dinner of Pacific Rim leaders hosted by President Barack Obama into a subtle protest with a song in support of the “Occupy” movement.

Makana, who goes by one name, was enlisted to play a luau, or Hawaiian feast, Saturday night for leaders assembled in Obama’s birthplace Honolulu for an annual summit that is formulating plans for a Pacific free-trade pact.

But in the midst of the dinner on the resort strip Waikiki Beach, he pulled open his jacket to reveal a T-shirt that read “Occupy with Aloha,” using the Hawaiian word whose various meanings include love and peace. He then sang a marathon version of his new song “We Are The Many.”

“I was pretty nervous. In fact I was terrified. I kept thinking ‘what are the consequences going to be?’” Makana, 33, told AFP.

that's what bravery is - going ahead when you are afraid. hugs and kisses for Makana

article said Obama was to occupied with his guests to notice the song. I wonder ......

3. Is that how we want President Obama to be treated when he goes abroad?
We were bad hosts.

My Republican friends are laughing that Obama was humiliated.

They think it's hilarious. It makes me feel ill.

My brother in law has had some conversations with Makana and says it's pretty known that the guy is an activist. He says Obama should have known and it serves him right. That is what I'm getting from another Republican co-worker.

My sister told her husband to stop talking about it because she couldn't bear to hear more.

Our Prez wanted to show people how welcoming Hawaii was to help us establish a reputation as a first class venue for serious work thanks to our central location. Instead we get this. You don't know what we went through to try to spruce up the place just for this thing.

I bet I am not the only person who is feeling depressed over our showing.

9. Oh is that going to build our local economy?
We depend on tourism here. We need for people to feel like when they come here they will be welcomed, not lectured at because lets face it...Hawaii is not cheap so there is room to make anyone who visits feel guilty about being a have.

Do you think convention planners who are wondering where they should go will be encouraged to book something here? A Hawaiian artist who posted a comment was pissed. He says it will be harder for them to get live gigs after this.

These things have consequences for others. Yeah maybe Makana is proud of his "hard work" but he is not the only one affected.

Yeah that's the ticket. It was a fucking song. A pretty tame one at that. Grow up. the Hawaiian economy is not gonna collapse because of it.

14. No but it's not encouraging to people who are working to bring people here.
And you don't give a damn if it affects us anyway.

I know people who help plan these events and conventions. It's a very rough business right now.

I bet Las Vegas and the other venues are thrilled. They can book professionals who won't do this.
