Did I miss it? Is Obama supporting Occupy?
Edited on Sat Nov-19-11 09:20 AM by MannyGoldstein
A thread yesterday claimed that Obama is being "motherfucked" on DU for supporting Occupy, because some here claim he's trying to co-opt the movement.

I have seen zero from Obama either endorsing Occupy, or denouncing the anti-occupy thuggery. (It would be nice if purposely-shot-in-the-head Iraq veteran Scott Olsen got as much sympathy as unharmed Henry Gates, I think.)

Have I missed something? Is Obama embracing the 99%?

video somewhere. I'm sure you could find it. It might even be at the Whitehouse.gov website if you look. They usually post things there. I saw the press conference...
the gist of what he said what that he understood that people were frustrated.
I remember specifically that he was asked a question about it.
I get no feeling that he's trying to co-opt, but that's just my take.

4. He is trying to NOT make it about him
He has said he supports it, but like his decision to not get involved in the
Wisconsin protests, if he steps in, it will be made about him. The whole narrative about it will change.
And so far, the OWS movement has changed the country's narrative very effectively. It is now all about
the 99% versus the 1%. Previously, the endless talk about deficits had hijacked the truth.Things are
much clearer now thanks to OWS. If Obama steps in, it becomes about politics and about how OWS
protesters are just Obama supporters in disguise and therefore don't speak for the country. Be grateful
he is not being an opportunist and ruining the movement.

The president's pro-OWS statements have been posted a bazillion times here. Just because you and a few others (including the OP) have CHOSEN not to see it doesn't mean that anyone here is obligated to indulge your willful ignorance.

Although the entire press conference is good if you want to watch it, because he's
bitching about Republican behavior and calls them out.

I would start about 7 minutes into part two.

It might be considered calling out another poster, which has been known to have ill effects on those of us to the left of the Third Way.

But if you're thoughtful at searching based on the words in my OP, you might stumble on something... who knows...

35. I don't know where the rule is, but I've seen lots of threads be locked due to
continuing arguments from one thread started up onto a new thread.

Maybe because starting up a thread to 'call-out' another thread is a call-out?

Who knows ;)

37. So Obama supports the Tea Party, too:
"Look, people are frustrated, and that frustration expresses itself in a lot of different ways. It expressed itself in the tea party. It’s expressing itself in Occupy Wall Street,” Obama said. “Everybody needs to understand that the American people feel that no one is looking out for them right now.”

I'll find the "unhelpful" quote after dinner. It was Daley and/or Geithner, IIRC.

Edited on Sat Nov-19-11 10:13 PM by Number23
"Obama said the most important thing he can do as president is express solidarity with the protesters and redouble his commitment to achieving what he described as a more egalitarian society.

“The most important thing we can do right now is those of us in leadership letting people know that we understand their struggles and we are on their side, and that we want to set up a system in which hard work, responsibility, doing what you’re supposed to do, is rewarded,” Obama said. “And that people who are irresponsible, who are reckless, who don’t feel a sense of obligation to their communities and their companies and their workers that those folks aren’t rewarded.”

Whenever he goes abroad, there is always a "why isn't he doing x" thing, since the president's primary job is to provide commentary on whatever any group of people is doing
