Chris Mathews on Barack & Michelle Obama: "They don't look happy-like they enjoy the presidency."
That's a paraphrase, but that was the gist of it. He also said that Obama basically thanked everyone for attending the inauguration and then said, "Now go home and watch how smart I am." Another paraphrase, but again, that was the gist of it.

He went on to say Obama never asks the people to do anything, like "Write to your congressman..." Has Chris been so busy selling his book that he missed Obama telling his audiences to "Call your congressman, or tweet, or email, or even write a letter to tell them to pass this bill"? Chris was talking a mile a minute, just spitting out these false claims about Obama (and the First Lady). I wish he'd stop talking for one minute and start listening.

1. If they looked happy they would be called out of touch.
Obama is doing us a favor by taking on all this. What person in their right mind enjoys a floundering economy and one near financial disaster after another?

I feel bad for him.

4. Good point.
But Chris said the Obamas don't look like they even like being President and First Lady. He's implying, IMO, that the Obamas wouldn't mind losing the '12 election. :eyes:

It's the after effects of a financial bubble, housing, which was the foundation of investing for the average American.

Hillary would be stuck too. But maybe a little less worse if she put jobs before health insurance reform.

15. I know, but I would never have written that she was doing us a favor.
It is the job they campaigned very hard to obtain. None of these politicians are doing us any favors. They only favor themselves. Maybe it's a cynical attitude, but IMO Obama is no different than the rest. he's main concern is to remain in power, whatever it takes. He's no LBJ in that respect. Ditto for the rest of them.

Where does THAT assessment come from?

He's fielded more death threats than any other President.

He's taken more obstructionist shit from Congress than any other.

He has an worthless Corporate MSM to have to work AROUND.

Did you know he just came from a very successful 9-day Asia trip? Probably not, if you were watching U.S. "media".

I'd say that continuing to do his job in the wake of a shitstorm of stupidity, ignorance and anger bespeaks a resilience that very few others possess.

13. When Obama ran, I said I wouldn't envy the Chimp's successor
The great Bush mess is deep and still stinks to high heaven. I don't see how any President could not be thinking occasionally about opening his veins, given the mess that Bush left, the inability to get anything past the Senate filibuster or the uncompromising House, and to work with an opposition party whose main goal is to bring down the economy in order to get him out of office. I criticize Obama for many things he does, but I have to admire his perseverence and patience in the face of a seemingly impossible situation. Of course he isn't enjoying the presidency. Who in their right mind would? Yet he goes on.

43. So, how happy would you be with your job if...
you have multiple death threats daily?

If your 'loyal opposition's' only goal is to destroy your credibility
and take you down at the expense of the country?

If the average citizen mocks you, derides you, and claims you are a foreign born plant sent to
overthrow the country?

If your wife is bashed daily ... as an angry, simian socialist?

And your hard-earned education is disregarded by those who can't spell correctly?

Really, Chris Matthews, you should know better than to compare
Obama to Kennedy, who was one of the priviliged few?
And to Clinton, who was riding high on the good old boy network?

You can't compare them, and then strike out on Obama,
who has little in common with these two white men,
besides intelligence and education.
Barack Obama was NOT to the manor born.
And most think he should only be allowed to enter the back door thereof.

Oh, I wonder why he's not thrilled with the office!

49. While "looking for a hero," or another JFK, he's lying about Obama and what he's doing.
He first claimed that Obama, unlike "Jack" Kennedy, always says "I" instead of "we." That's plain false. A funny thing is that when Chris was on one of MSNBC's shows pimping his book, he was asked why he thinks Obama's numbers are improving, he said it's because Obama started using "we" instead of "I" (just in the last few weeks, which is ridiculous).

He also claimed that Obama never asks us to DO anything, like calling our congressmen, which I'm sure you know is totally false, too, as he has repeatedly told people to call, write, tweet, use a carrier pigeon, to let let their congressmen know to pass the jobs bill (and then to pass parts of the bill).

And he continued with his false claims, saying that Obama told his supporters, right after his inauguration, to "go home and watch how smart I am."

I understand that he's trying to sell his book and that he thinks JFK was a hero, but he can't just make stuff up to try to diminish Obama at the same time.

he (Matthews)... wants so much for Obama and the country to work. He's a brilliant historian..with an immense amount
of gravitas. I was actually thinking...Obama needs to hire him as a chief adviser.

Most everyone, including me, and Obama's strongest supporters, believe that there is something missing. Not enough
to not want him elected, HELL NO, but something deep and intrinsic.

72. Obama has been doing those things BEFORE Matthews' book came out.
Chris IS brilliant in his way regarding politics, but he also, at times (like this) gets a thought in his head and won't let go-like a dog with a bone, regardless of the facts.

He obviously has not been watching Obama's town halls that he's been giving for WAY before Chris's book came out, where he DOES ask people to act. Maybe he's too busy preparing for his show every day, but he surely must've been unaware that Obama has been doing the very things Chris has been claiming he wasn't doing.

And for him to claim that both Barack and Michele don't enjoy the presidency, saying they're not happy, is also something he could not possibly know, but if he'd look at them once in a while, he wouldn't say such a thing. They both look extremely happy and energized when they're out talking to the people, hosting WH events, etc. Facts DO matter.

50. imo Chris has a good heart and I love his enthusiasm for all things political but...
...he really is not a good listener - and far too often interrupts his guests.

51. I agree...
which is why I never miss his show. He loves politics, and he does go hard on people he disagrees with, but he does need to stop talking and start listening much more.

deciding what the man who most likely does know too much is thinking and feeling.

Makes good TV anyways...I guess he reckons!

He knew as well as Bush what was coming and so did she. Tried to argue against it in the campaign and inherited the biggest mess in history and the worst enemies ever. Who would want that?

Edited here:

Okay, I see I'm getting a few replies on this for mentioning my impressions from nearly 3 years ago. I fully expect him to run, and I respect that he is not playing for the votes.

I voted for him and will vote for him again. In fact, I've told my friends if they sent a ballot a year in advance, I'd vote for him right now and get it over with. I am one of the infamous DU Obamabots. So you guys can fight it out with the anti-Obama's.

Bye now.

truth (real) seeker. He is sincere. And, he is right. He is trying to shake Obama up.

69. Chris Matthews is full of spittle and is a *PAB.
He's full of sour grapes because, during the campaign, when *PAB tried to jam up candidate Obama, the future president put his foot in *PAB's mouth and *PAB hasn't recovered and never will. Correct me if I'm wrong, but *PAB has never interviewed Obama again--doesn't have access-- and probably never will.

*PAB is trying to generate interest in his latest book, too, so he'll say anything.

That is all.

*PAB = Punk A** B****.

and it's so maddening. He should know better, but he seems to romanticize JFK and then he compares Obama unfavorably, despite the facts.

80. Chris Matthews is the epitome of a Beltway insider
working for the media arm of the Comcast corporation. He voted for GW Bush in 2000. He's a fool and a liar, and he's clearly intellectually incapable of commenting on modern politics.

84. WHy does Tweety still have a show? He has largely passed his peremption date.
He is the one who is totally out of touch. Enjoying the presidency? I would not trust anybody who enjoys the job at this particular time.
