DNC wields Newt Gingrich immigration answer against Mitt Romney
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 11/23/11 6:02 AM EST

The Democratic National Committee has produced a post-debate video suggesting Newt Gingrich, and not Mitt Romney, is being "honest" on immigration:

The theme - that Romney is not a Republican with whom Latino voters should feel comfortable - is not a new one for the DNC.

What makes this video more striking, though, than the usual anti-Romney tape, is how openly this one applauds Gingrich's answer on immigration. If the former House speaker ends up as the Republican presidential nominee, he'll be able to point to his position as a sign of moderation and friendliness toward Latino voters.

But running against Gingrich is not an eventuality that Democrats fear, and the party remains focused, pretty much exclusively, on wearing down Romney as a potential general election opponent.

The framing of the lead question - "Who is being honest" about immigration? - also underscores how character-driven the Democratic campaign against Romney has been. It's not just about Romney's political views. It's about the personal trustworthiness of the candidate.

1. I don't know how anyone can applaud Gingrich's type of "honesty"
Yeah, Gingrich is more realstic because he knows it would be impossible to round up 10 million or more aliens and send them back. Romney knows this too, but he knows the base wants to hear about massive future deportations. But then the Republican base is nuts and Romney knows this as well; they can't even tolerate Newt talking about a humane solution to immigration.

But is Gingrich's position all that humane? He doesn't want to deport millions of people who have been here for years because he knows it can't be done. He wants to establish a separate illegal category for them, a so-called "red" card where they will never have a path to permant residence and ctizenship, will have to publicly identify themselves to the rest of society as having arrived here illegally, and will forever remain in a low wage underclass where the real culprits (the employers) will be able to continue to exploit them as a low wage employee base with impunity.
