Al Sharpton's brilliant smackdown of Limbaugh and NASCAR's treatment of Michelle Obama:
He called Limbaugh out as a racist, but then didn't give him any more energy. And he didn't attack or belittle the NASCAR fans who have bought into Limbaugh's racism - he simply reminded them how much more their interests align with the "uppity" ones than with Limbaugh and his ilk. Nicely done, Rev.

Uppity-ism. That`s why some in the NASCAR crowd booed the first lady and Mrs. Biden, according to Rush. Well, first of all, many cheered. But second of all, uppity-ism clearly refers to people that don't stay in their place. It was always used as a term for blacks. Is it racist? Yes, unequivocally. It's a racist use of term. It {means} that people should stay in their place. I guess Mrs. Obama didn't stay in her place when she went to Princeton, and she didn't stay in her place when she became a lawyer, and she didn`t stay in her place when she went on to become a senator's wife and now she's the first lady. And don't dare fly as the first lady. You don't know your place.

Because, Rush, places have changed in America. But we're not going to get distracted by you, Rush.

We're not going to let us get off of focus here because the problem is that you have as little respect for those NASCAR people as you do the first lady, because you don't advocate an extension of the payroll tax for them. You don't want them to have the same rights that the one percent have. You don't want them to have health care coverage.

So don't try to divide them from those that want to have one level playing field in America by playing the race card. We won't bite the bait. Not now. We have a country to save. We'll take care of you later, Rush. And I really do understand your problem, because when you're playing gutter politics and you lay in the gutter politics, anyone on the high road looks uppity to you, Rush. It's really the vantage point of how you look at things. Happy Thanksgiving, Rush.

7. Yup, I'm the same way. I couldn't stand him; but now I love the things he says
No presidential candidate brightens up the campaign season like Al Sharpton. I've changed my mind about him, too.

36. He's long been a class warrior
But because he's black, he's been smeared as someone who is only interested in race, which just isn't true.

39. You don't know him then. He is and always will be a class warrior.
What you fail to see is how race is intimately entwined with class. They can't really be divided. Not in the US at least.

Obviously Al Sharpton does.

>>> AlbertSharpton:

"Well, first of all, many cheered."

"you (Rush) have as little respect for those NASCAR people as you do the first lady,"

"So don't try to divide them from those that want to have one level playing field in America by playing the race card."

---------------------------------------------------

>>> AlbertCat:

Sounds like RushLimbaugh AND AlbertCat
are both quite divisive--
not to mention ignorant...

22. I just published this post on a Nascar blog.
I hate the "sport", left turn, left turn, left turn, but thought I'd try and stir something up. Can't believe they let me start a thread 5 minutes after I joined. I hope I make some people angry (and some giddy).

25. The thing with Al
Is that people don't really know Al Sharpton. They see a brief characterization of him in sound bytes, but Al Sharpton is calm and intelligent and knows exactly how to argue for his side of any issue. He's held up as a pariah by the right, but when you hear him talk he spot on and very careful in his choice of words.

35. Excellent point - and so true
Much of the criticism of Al Sharpton - even among liberals - has been based upon a caricature created by people who are either uncomfortable with or afraid of a black man who speaks his mind. As a result, he's been smeared as a race-baiting, race-card-playing "race pimping/hustling" buffoon when he is nothing of the kind. Rev. Sharpton is a thoughtful, intelligent, articulate voice of reason who has long been a champion not just of blacks but of people at the bottom of the totem pole, regardless of their race.

I'm really glad that he has a show on MSNBC so that people can see who he really is - and he is knocking it out of the park on a regular basis.

41. I've always thought the same thing.
The right has always used their race to try to marginalize the message of both Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. The haters ususally even almost always mention them together.

My brother who is a southern white redneck more or less and voted for Reagan actually voted for Jackson in the primary in the 80's because he was listening to his speeches about the US workers and middle class and not focusing on his skin. "How many of you own a VCR?? OK now how many own an cruise missle? The US doesn't make anything anybody wants anymore" Dated but one of Jacksons great lines and still relevant.

I'm glad that somebody actually gave Sharpton a decent medium to speak in so people could hear his message directly thru him and not spun thru the GOP noise machine, but still I think some really great liberals like him are still not getting enough coverage.

32. limbaugh wouldn't last if our universities pulled their sports from his racist radio stations
15 of the final 16 NCAA basketball teams last year endorse limbaugh by broadcasting on radio stations that play him. they get community standing and ad revenue because of it.

many of his stations depend on university sports that way.

limbaugh stations, with few exceptions, are all RW, all 1%, all partisan republican. All are dedicated to global warming denial. All spread his racism and sexism and lies. All are licensed to operate in the public interest, use call screeners to protect their talkers, and take paid callers to prompt and reinforce their propaganda.

universities that endorse the 1% radio with their sports have mission statements that if taken literally would contradict their association with limbaugh and right wing radio.

can they argue they need the money from those stations so badly that they can ignore their mission statements so blatantly?

free speech? no, they are requiring students without high speed or TV to listen to their sports on right wing 1% republican radio.

global warming alone demands that all universities that want too call themselves institutions of higher learning break their current contracts and look for alternative radio stations ASAP, or demand balanced programming.

without those universities many of the biggest limbaugh stations would fold or have to adapt.
