Right wing militias grow from 149 to 824 since Obama's election.
No one can forget how Timothy McVeigh set off a bomb in front of a federal building in Oklahoma City in April 19, 1995, killing 168 people including 19 children under the age of 6. FBI efforts to avert another outrage have taken on increased importance in recent years, as fears of Islamic terrorism, a sour economy, expanded federal powers under the Patriot Act, and the nation’s first black president have swelled the ranks of extremist groups. Since President Obama’s election, the number of right-wing extremist groups—a term that covers a broad array of dissidents ranging from white supremacists to antigovernment militias—has mushroomed from 149 to 824, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Alabama-based civil-rights group.

10. Where did that come from?
the OP doesn't have much to say about gun laws except militias seem inclined to break them.

2. The "mentality" of the hard-core RW is truly disturbing..

but I think there is also much more racism/hatred from mainstream conservative Republicans.. eg Sarah Palin types. Perhaps we as a nation, were not quite ready for a President with black skin and a scary Muslim name.

4. Same thing happened during the Clinton era, also. There has always been a teabagger continguency
in this country. They have found a party that welcomes in bigots and xenophobes (and a whole host of other phobias.)

7. But in such large numbers? To a similar degree?
I strongly believe that race amps up the hatred factor where these groups are concerned, and underwrites a lot of attitudes and actions in opposition to this President.

What are the recent stats on death threats against this POTUS compared to other presidents? I think it relates.

8. I believe so
or it was very comparable. However, going on memory, these militias peaked in comparable numbers toward the end of Clinton's 8 years. What would be alarming is they reached this level in less than 3 years after Obama was elected.

I don't know of any published stats on POTUS threats. Yes it relates. My guess is the threats are record, never before seen numbers.
