The Mitt Romney campaign tonight sent an email from communications director Gail Gitcho, invoking Hillary Clinton as a sympathetic figure and attempting to put a wedge based on the 2008 campaign between the Secretary of State's supporters in swing states and the president.

That battle left Clinton's supporters embittered and angry, and back then, John McCain sought to use lingering animosity to his advantage - suggesting his then-Senate colleague was treated poorly by Team Obama. It didn't work, and if anything it angered Democrats who, even if they hadn't voted for Obama in the primaries, wanted him to win over a Republican in the fall.

Of course, what has come between then and now is the Obama presidency, which is the case the Romney campaign is making, in the hopes of appealing to the Hillary Democrats and independents with whom the president has been struggling.

According to Talking Points Memo, he is also using the words spoken (in 2008) by the current DNC Chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, to attack President Obama now. I don't understand why words spoken in 2008 would have any logical relevance to now, particularly since President Obama has a fairly impressive record as POTUS that he's managed to build up since then but that's Romney for you. :eyes: :shrug:

10. I think it all ties into the "Obama is having trouble with white women" angle

that the media has tossed out on numerous occasions.

First, they'll invoke Hillary, patron saint of embittered white female Democrats. (I am in no way suggesting that all white female Dems are embittered, but for alot of the ones that are, Hillary's loss to Obama is the reason.)

Then they'll try to use DW-S' words against the president. Then they'll find a way to work in Lady Evelyn (BigotBasher has done some absolutely HYSTERICAL exposes on her) and Jane Hamsher (BB has skewered her as well).

11. The media keeps spewing out these stories

that suggest that he's having problems with some group or another based on a few carefully selected anecdotes but then they get debunked by polls that show that he is actually o.k. with them.

I find it interesting that Romney is doing this now just after last week (or was it the week before, I keep losing track), you had those two Fox News "Democratic pollsters" suggesting that Obama give up the Presidency to Hillary.

Any "dead enders" still clutching their pearls of hate for President Obama for beating Hillary in 2008 are surely few and far between, right? :shrug:

But I have been absolutely astounded at the number of Dems that are determined to hold onto that grudge so tight and for so long until it becomes part of their anatomy. Remember Geraldine Ferraro went to her grave STILL pissed about the president for beating Hillary. And as you mentioned, those two "Dem" strategists were stirring up this tired shit just last week or so.

And we all know that there are a number of DUers that may as well come out and say that they will NEVER forgive Obama for beating Hillary. It's been THREE DAMN YEARS and all of these folks are almost as pissed today as they were when it happened. You just want to grab them by the hair and scream "GET OVER IT ALREADY FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!"

Outside of maybe one or two people that I've seen here on DU I don't really know a lot of people whom are still holding a grudge about Obama beating Clinton in 2008 but I guess that the media and the right wouldn't still be trying to stir things up if they didn't think that they still could. Truth is, I don't think that it's going to amount to much in the end. Unless Clinton herself was actually trying to put herself in a position to possibly primary Obama in 2012 (which she does not appear to be), then it's likely not to go anywhere.

22. I think you're absolutely right

Hillary hasn't expressed (as far as I know) any interest or desire in being president. She has openly stated that she is NOT running for president ever again. So I agree that none of this is going to go anywhere.

This whole thing doesn't appear to be anything more than people trying to peel away the president's white support. As has been noted, McCain tried to do the same thing in 2008.

The rumor machine has burped out plots since 1-20-09 of having the president step aside or the VP step aside or the surreal suggestion of a switcheroo, various machinations to install Hillary in the WH. I imagine the barking will continue and increase in the countdown to election 2012. The good news is that it comes from what Chris Hayes calls the distillation of bitterness into the demiglace of crazy. The few still waxing rhapsodic were always going to vote against big bad Barack anyway so I'm fine with whoever gets the Republican nomination beating the bushes to flush out those three votes that were theirs anyway.

over having lost the nomination to Obama in 2008 can't have been much of a Democrat to begin with IMHO. Remember that the right was actually trying to pump up Hillary over Obama for awhile there during the primaries (Rush's "Operation Chaos").
