There was a time, back in 72 when Colorado said no to The Olympics over environmental concerns - There's a new push to host 2016, but I expect there will be support because of job creation. They've ruined the mountains anyway with a gazillion condos and McMcMansions, so the environment won't be a concern

It's really only THAT blue because of Chicago in the north. Outside of the St. Louis metro east and a few college towns, the state is very, very conservative.

The Twin Cities are liberal--the rest of the state is very conservative. (When I lived there, we had the most liberal senator, Paul Wellstone, and the most conservative, Rod Grams--at the same time!).

Upstate New York is much more conservative than the greater NYC region.

The reason New England states like Massachusetts appear more liberal is because of their geographic size, imo. Boston has a pretty big reach in a small state. That said, I lived in MA for 5 years, and it is less liberal than you think. Since so many are Democrats, it cuts a very wide swath across the ideological spectrum.

The map depicts "self-identified" liberals. And, living here, I CAN see it being more accurate. There are plenty of liberals in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville. Not to mention there has been an influx of them among the retirees that have been moving here in droves over the past decade. North Carolina has their liberal bastion of Asheville, and a fair number in the Raleigh-Durham area. But, the rest of the state, especially the eastern half, is pretty damn conservative.

36. No. Plenty of liberals don't identify as "liberals," which the RW has framed to mean...

..."dirty hippies." So these statistics are skewed by personal bias. They lack basic scientific standards. (See post #30 below.)
