If Mitt Romney were a member of your family, who would he be? Your father? Your brother? Your crazy Uncle Larry who drank too much at Thanksgiving?
Well, to a dozen Republicans who participated in a focus group Thursday night in suburban Virginia, he’s none of the above.
At best, the group considered him a second cousin or a “fun neighbor.” At worst, he’s the dad who’s never home. Or, in the words of one Romney supporter, “He’s richer than the rest of us” and wouldn’t attend family functions.
All night, Mr. Romney registered weak responses from 12 likely Republican primary voters. Reanne Dunn, a 43-year-old homemaker from Vienna, Va., who favors Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, called him wishy-washy and got the impression that he’s just trying not to lose. Even people inclined to support Mr. Romney didn’t seem excited about the prospect. Deborah Secrist, a 55-year-old administration assistant who said she would vote for the former Massachusetts governor if the primary were held today, called him “a buffer,” a “four-year holdover” and “a safe bet.”
