Gingrich Leads in Three Early States

New CNN/Time polls show Newt Gingrich leading in three of the first four states voting in the Republican presidential nomination process and within striking distance in the fourth.

Iowa: Gingrich 33%, Romney 20%, Paul 17%, Perry 9%, Bachmann 7%, Santorum 5%, Huntsman 1%.

New Hampshire: Romney 35%, Gingrich 26%, Paul 17%, Huntsman 8%, Bachmann 3% Perry 2%, Santorum 2%

South Carolina: Gingrich 43%, Romney 20%, Perry 8%, Bachmann 6%, Paul 6%, Santorum 4%, Huntsman 1%.

3. It's possible, despite all previous precedent, that Newt could do well early and fail on Super Tues.

There are eight weeks between Florida and Super Tuesday. That's long enough for the polls to shift significantly. Romney and the establishment could go nuclear on Newt. But would it be enough? I doubt it. If anything, a crippled Romney will fall behind a resurgent Perry or some even more implausible candidate.
